A new study shows that, yes, the right wing really is opening its arms to fascism and, yes, it’s absolutely because they’re racist assholes:
Political scientists Steven V. Miller of Clemson and Nicholas T. Davis of Texas A&M have released a working paper titled “White Outgroup Intolerance and Declining Support for American Democracy.” Their study finds a correlation between white American’s intolerance, and support for authoritarian rule.
Translation? Racist white people love democracy when democracy benefits mostly just white people. When democracy starts to benefit everyone else, those same racist white people turn their backs on democracy and run as fast as they can away from it.
Fascism is fashionable
It’s important to note that these racist white people (not all white people, just the racist ones) have a very specific issue with democracy. The study doesn’t show that they’re upset that democracy will no longer benefit them, they’re upset that Those People will also benefit. In other words, to the racist white American, democracy was a weapon to keep Those People in their place and now that it’s losing its power, it’s time to ditch it.
If you doubt this growing disdain for democracy, you haven’t been paying attention to what Republicans have been doing for the past several years:
White people continue to decrease as a percentage of the U.S. population; at some point, it’s going to be impossible to win a national, democratic American election with a platform that alienates people of color. The GOP, seeing their coming demographic apocalypse, has pushed voter ID laws and other barriers to voting to try to prevent black and other minority voters from getting to the polls. In Wisconsin, Republican Governor Scott Walker even attempted to delay elections for state seats that he believed Democrats would win.
Combine this push to limit democracy with the rise of white nationalist fascism on the right and you have exactly what the study shows: Racist white Americans rushing towards fascism to prevent Those People from sharing power.
White makes right
The more honest white nationalists are pretty clear about their loathing of democracy:
Miller and Davis’ paper quotes alt right, neo-fascist leader Richard Spencer, who in a 2013 speech declared: “We need an ethno-state so that our people can ‘come home again’… We must give up the false dreams of equality and democracy.” Ethnic cleansing is impossible as long as marginalized people have enough votes to stop it. But this roadblock disappears if you get rid of democracy. Spencer understands that white rule in the current era essentially requires totalitarianism. That’s the logic of fascism.
Exactly. White Republican voters will never be able to make America white again as long as all these pesky brown people have the right to vote. It’s crazy, but there’s just no way the black and Latino communities are going to vote to put themselves in concentration camps. The nerve of them!
The End Game
What we’re seeing is the frantic attempt of horrible people to destroy American democracy. While they mouth platitudes about “freedom” and how much they worship the national anthem, they would overthrow our system of government in a heartbeat if they thought they could get away with it. Republicans have already stolen two presidential elections and one Supreme Court seat in just the past 20 years. They’ve rigged elections, gerrymandered entire states, and suppressed the vote on a massive scale all to the thunderous applause of white Republican voters. It won’t be much longer until they simple decide to cancel an election they know will cost them control of Congress under the aegis on “national security.”
After that, elections will be centralized under the federal government to “ensure their integrity.” Because it’s just too risky letting all of these different states hold their own elections. Why, who knows what the outcome will be?! That’s no way to run an orderly country. And as we finish our descent in to full blown fascism, Trump’s white Republican voters will breathe easier knowing that America won’t be helping Those People anymore.
And that’s the entire point of this.
