By Warning Of A Democratic “Coup” Against Trump, Republicans Recklessly Incite Political Violence

At this point, it’s clear that Republicans are in a lot of trouble come November. Trump’s erratic behavior and incompetence has depressed enthusiasm among GOP voters while his corruption and all around vileness has enraged and energized Democratic voters. It’s so bad that gerrymandered Republican districts in states with serious voter suppression are at risk when that should be all but impossible.

Under normal circumstances, a normal political party would take its lumps, retrench, and reorient itself to try to win back seats in the next election cycle. But this is the Republican Party and the only thing they care about now is clinging to power at all costs. If, along the way, they trigger a wave of domestic terrorism, that’s just too bad; they’re still going to take the most destructive route to victory:

WASHINGTON — As Republican leaders scramble to stave off a Democratic wave or at least mitigate their party’s losses in November, a strategy is emerging on the right for how to energize conservatives and drive a wedge between the anti-Trump left and moderate voters: warn that Democrats will immediately move to impeach President Trump if they capture the House.

If that’s as far as they went, that wouldn’t be a problem. It’s quite likely the House Democrats will impeach Trump but he wouldn’t be convicted and removed (See Clinton, Bill) because Senate Republicans would never allow it. But Republicans can’t terrify their base by explaining that to them. Instead, they’re deliberately inciting violence:

What began last year as blaring political hyperbole on the right — the stuff of bold-lettered direct mail fund-raising pitches from little-known groups warning of a looming American “coup” — is now steadily drifting into the main currents of the 2018 message for Republicans.

By calling impeachment a “coup”, Republicans are casting the Democrats as insurgents trying to illegally overthrow the government. Saying this to people who already consider themselves under attack by Muslims, immigrants and hordes of black people trying to destroy the white race is like throwing a match on gasoline; sooner or later one of Trump’s “patriots” is going to grab one of their many guns and “save” America by killing Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, or whoever else they’ve been told is part of the “Deep State” trying to “steal” the country.

It’s important to note, because the “liberal” press does not, that is a tactic only the right employs. When Republicans impeached Bill Clinton in the 90s, they actually were trying to nullify the election but the Democrats did not urge their base to fight back against a “coup”. The impeachment was purely political in nature with only the GOP and the press (who despised the Clintons) supporting it. The rest of the country found it distasteful and punished Republicans for wasting the nation’s time. If and when Democrats move to impeach Trump, however, it will be for far more than a blow job in the Oval Office and Republicans know it. That’s why they’ve spent so much time and effort muddying the waters and trying to burn the FBI to the ground.

Now Republicans are twisting the checks and balances of the Constitution into something dangerous to democracy and they’re doing it solely to preserve their own illegitimate power. And when blood is spilled in the name of their phony crusade, they’ll shrug their shoulders, send thoughts and prayers, and wonder out loud on Fox News how things have gotten so bad in America; then go right back to stoking the violence because they never pay a price for it.

This, as much as any other reason, is why they have to be crushed this November and every November after it. The Republican Party is simply too dangerous to be allowed to continue exercising power in this country until they stop wielding it like a 3-year-old waving around a loaded gun.
