According to Florida law, it is illegal to use exploding or flying fireworks that include: shells and mortars, multiple tube devices, Roman candles, rockets and firecrackers. Adult Floridians are only legally allowed to use sparklers that have been approved by the Florida Division of State Fire Marshal.
However, as the NYT’s reported yesterday, anyone of legal age “without a felony record, domestic abuse conviction, or a handful of other exceptions — such as a commitment to a mental institution — can walk into a gun store, wait a few minutes to clear a background check, and walk out with an AR-15 -style rifle, magazines and ammunition.”
You must be 21 to buy a handgun from a firearms dealer, but only 18 for an AR-15, the semi-automatic weapon of choice for the gunmen in 5 out of 6 of the deadliest mass shootings in recent times.
Just think about that for a moment — you are not allowed to buy a firecracker in Florida due to health and safety concerns, but an 18 year old can buy military grade hardware designed exclusively to kill other humans with a simple background check in under 10 minutes. Nikolas Cruz, who killed 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida this week, purchased his gun entirely legally. Continued the Times:
The AR-15 rifle used in the attack was purchased legally, at Sunrise Tactical Supply in Florida, according to a federal law enforcement official. “No laws were violated in the procurement of this weapon,” said Peter J. Forcelli, the special agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Miami.
This is utterly, utterly insane and cannot stand for a moment longer. The NRA and every single politician in their pocket must be defeated so this madness can end and American children can go to school without the risk of having their goddamn heads blown off. Enough is enough is enough.
