Donald Trump is Now Blaming President Obama For Russia Hacks

Proving yet again that he is manifestly unfit to be the Commander in Chief, Donald Trump is now blaming President Obama for Russia hacking the 2016 election, and also calling it a Democratic “scam”. He tweeted out the following salvo in response to the latest revelations from the ongoing investigation into his ties to Russia and attempts to obstruct justice:

Firstly, Jeh Johnson absolutely did not state that there was “no grand scheme between Trump & Russia.” While being questioned by Rep. Trey Gowdy, Johnson made clear that he hadn’t seen evidence of collusion “beyond what has been out there open-source, and not beyond anything that I’m sure this committee has already seen and heard before, directly from the intelligence community”.

Here is the transcript of the interaction (video here, highlights ours):

GOWDY: At the time you separated from service in January 2017, had you seen any evidence that Donald Trump or any member of his campaign colluded, conspired or coordinated with the Russians or anyone else to infiltrate or impact our voter infrastructure?

JOHNSON: Not beyond what has been out there open-source, and not beyond anything that I’m sure this committee has already seen and heard before, directly from the intelligence community. So anything I’d have on that is derivative of what the intelligence community has — and the law enforcement community.

GOWDY: Speaking of the intelligence community, it strikes me that most of the information currently available was available in the fall of 2016. Most of the intelligence products that are relied upon to form certain assessments — that underlying data was available in 2016, some of it before the election.

JOHNSON: I’m not in a position to agree or disagree with that, because I don’t have access anymore to intelligence over the last five months.

So Johnson, like everyone else, doesn’t know whether there was collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russian government. Hence the need for a thorough, public investigation.

Secondly, it is completely irrelevant whether Obama took appropriate action against potential Russian hacks. It is worth noting that Johnson (whom Trump apparently likes to cite) went to considerable lengths to defend Obama’s handling of the situation, but above all it is now Donald Trump’s responsibility to find out what happened and not pass the blame onto someone else.

Thirdly, the DNC’s failure to take the threat of hacks seriously or turn over their servers during the election isn’t evidence of a “scam”. It means that they made a very serious error and paid the consequences for it politically. Trump’s assertion is another straw man argument designed to distract people from the investigation into his affairs.

For any other president in US history, this type of behavior would not be tolerated and responsible adults in Congress would ensure his impeachment before it got too far out of hand. But here we are in 2017 with a president who cannot take responsibility for his actions, refuses to comply with investigations into his deeply unethical behavior, and lies on an hourly basis. Not only that, he may have colluded with a foreign government in order to subvert the democratic process of his own country — an act of treason that should land him in jail, not the White House.

There can be no denying now that Trump is a failed president. When will America wake up and do something about it?
