Yet more signs of extreme panic are coming out of the White House over the Mueller investigation into Trump’s potential obstruction of justice over Russiagate. Not only has Vice President Mike Pence lawyered up with private counsel in advance of the oncoming shitstorm, Trump’s own personal lawyer Michael Cohen has now himself hired a lawyer. From CNN:
President Donald Trump’s longtime attorney and adviser Michael Cohen has hired a lawyer to represent him in the investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, Cohen told CNN on Friday.
Cohen, who serves as Trump’s personal attorney, hired Stephen Ryan, a partner at the DC-based law firm McDermott, Will and Emery, to handle inquiries related to the investigations into Russian meddling in the election. News of the hire comes two weeks after Cohen was subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee as part of the committee’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Cohen told CNN earlier this week that he is “committed to complying with the subpoena.” He has also agreed to testify before the committee September 5.
Just let that sink in for a moment. Members of the Trump administration are so heavily implicated in potentially illegal dealings with Russia that the goddamn lawyers are hiring lawyers to cover their behinds.
The circle of people implicated in the Trump campaign’s dealings with Russia is expanding by the day, and the White House is going to extreme measures to protect itself. This is not a sign of guilt in of itself, but combined with the overwhelming evidence already publicly available about Trump’s extremely sketchy relationship with Russia and his unbelievably stupid attempts to stop James Comey’s investigation into it amounts to the mother of all political shit storms. And it’s about to descend upon Pennsylvania Avenue, so buckle up and grab the popcorn.
