If you haven’t already read about the disgusting incident in Montana, Greg Gianforte, the Republican candidate for that state’s sole congressional seat, body-slammed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs to the ground and then proceeded to punch him several times while screaming that he was “sick and tired of you guys,” meaning reporters asking him uncomfortable questions.
Aside from the fact that no one this unstable should be allowed to represent a civic association much less an entire state, the statement released by his campaign should send a chill down the spine of anyone who even remotely cares about freedom of the press.
“Tonight, as Greg was giving a separate interview in a private office, The Guardian’s Ben Jacobs entered the office without permission, aggressively shoved a recorder in Greg’s face, and began asking badgering questions,” [spokesman Shane] Scanlon said. “Jacobs was asked to leave. After asking Jacobs to lower the recorder, Jacobs declined. Greg then attempted to grab the phone that was pushed in his face. Jacobs grabbed Greg’s wrist, and spun away from Greg, pushing them both to the ground. It’s unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ.”
Ignore that just about everything in that statement is a lie that’s already been debunked by eyewitness and an audio recording of the events. Focus on the justification Scanlon gave:
It’s unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ.
There is exactly one reason the word “liberal” is in that sentence and that’s to tell Trump voters that this is how things should be now. Liberal journalists after all, are the “enemy of the people” according to the president and so attacking them is A-OK in Trump’s America. No go out and vote for beating up reporters!
Already on social media, conservatives are all kinds of excited that a libtard reporter got beaten up:
Be honest, who among us has not wanted to body slam a nagging reporter? This sounds like a guy who gets stuff done, got my vote.

He got sick and tired of being called racist and a bigot and took it out on that reporter. We are all sick of it! So get ready.

And just for fun, here’s a bizarre one claiming that Debbie Wasserman Schultz telling a sheriff that he must follow the rules or there would be consequences is somehow worse than a Republican physically attacking a reporter. No, seriously, that’s what the tweet says:
Republican Greg Gianforte did a bad thing but is it as bad as Debbie Wasserman Schultz threatening a sheriff?🤔

It’s more than likely that every one of these people enjoying the criminal assault of a journalist and on freedom of the press will tell you in the next breath that they revere the Constitution. And in their mind, there is no contradiction here because they only care about the parts that say they can have all the guns they want, their religion is more important than any law, and that no one is allowed to tell them to shut up. It’s true that the Constitution says exactly none of these things, but they’ve been told it does by Fox News and AM Hate Radio so it’s absolute gospel to them now.
The more troubling concern here is if Gianforte wins today’s election, it’s a tacit endorsement by his voters that using violence to settle political disagreements is acceptable, particularly when that violence is directed at the “liberal press.” Trump’s moral rot has already spread wide and deep among his supporters who crave the kind of authoritarian tactics used by dictators around the world. It won’t take much more for them to start organizing into mobs of “concerned citizens” that enforce the “will of the people” with their fists. Trump has been encouraging this kind of hate against the press from the very start and legitimizing it will be the beginning of the end for the American Experiment.
There are 530 days left to the 2018 elections.
