Read Kellyanne Conway’s Denial of ‘Morning Joe’ Accusations Very, Very Carefully

Kellyanne Conway has finally responded to the rather shocking comments attributed to her by Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough about her boss, Donald Trump. The ‘Morning Joe’ hosts both claimed that during the presidential campaign, Conway would come on their show to vigorously defend Trump, then denounce him as a loathsome creep as soon as the mic was off. Conway reportedly said she felt like “taking a shower” after defending Trump, and was basically in it for the money.

Conway was uncharacteristically silent for the entire day in the wake of the accusations, taking over 24 hours to craft a response. She posted this message on Twitter earlier today:

The hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe have become virulent critics of the President and those close to him. Ignoring insults and insinuations is a valuable skill. But when sentiments are attributed to me that are not true, it is necessary to respond.

My beliefs, commitments and loyalties are plain to see.

The notion that I am serving for “the money” or a “paycheck” is absurd. As campaign manager, I made a fraction of what other consultants have made on unsuccessful presidential campaigns. Then I walked away from dozens of opportunities for millions of dollars, and instead walked into the White House. I would do it again.

It is a privilege to assist President Trump in the White House, just as it was during the campaign. I know him, I respect him, I believe in him, and I am confident in his capacity to be a transformative and successful President.

In true Kellyanne Conway fashion, the defense is little more than a sophisticated wordplay designed to distract the public from the fact that she isn’t denying the accusation at all

Look specifically at what she is denying: the accusation that she is serving Trump for “the money” or a “paycheck” — and nothing else. While there is a lot of noise about Brzezinski and Scarborough being “virulent critics of the President” and accusing them of leveling “insults and insinuations” at her, Conway does not deny saying she loathed Trump, or wanted to “take a shower” after defending him. While she does state her “commitments and loyalties” to Trump, Conway was careful not to address the main focus of Brzezinski and Scarborough’s accusation — that she hates her boss and views him as “a client” (a phrase she used herself).

Furthermore, if you look at what Scarborough said during the segment, he refutes Brzezinski’s accusation about her doing it for the money:

I don’t know that she ever said, ‘I’m doing this for the money,’” Scarborough continued. “But she said, ‘This is just my summer vacation, my summer in Europe and basically I’m just going to get through this.’

If there is merit to Conway’s response, it can only be in regards to Brzezinski’s specific claim that she was “in it for the money”. The rest of it is almost certainly true and Kellyanne Conway quite clearly isn’t denying it. Which is actually a step up from her, because at least she isn’t flat out lying.
