In a sad commentary on the state of American journalism, Teen Vogue has been raising more of an alarm about Donald Trump’s disturbing association with Nazi sympathizers and white nationalists than much of the “liberal” press:
The “Alt-Right” is known for its extremist and racist views, as well as being severely anti-Semitic. It seems like the association between the Trump campaign and neo-Nazis won’t be broken any time soon, as his chosen national security advisor, General Mike Flynn, recently met with Heinz-Christian Strache — the head of Austria’s far-right Freedom Party, which was established by former Nazis after World War II.
This should be another in a series of giant red flags about the intentions of the Trump administration. The core ideology of the Freedom Party is, unsurprisingly, white supremacy with an emphasis on demonizing immigrants (sound familiar?). While much of the press is hovering around Trump waiting for him to pivot towards respectability, his supporters are becoming more aggressive in their harassment of Jews and other minorities. This latest revelation will only exacerbate the problem.
The fact that Trump’s administration is reaching out to white nationalist Nazi sympathizers is a clear indication that he’s fully prepared to govern as a white nationalist. While the United States has traditionally held its nose to cooperate with strategically important but otherwise odious governments (think Saudi Arabia), the Freedom Party is not the governing party of Austria. They are, however, good friends with the Russians, having just signed a “cooperation agreement” with them:
Word of the agreement with Russia was the latest sign that the Kremlin is forging bonds with political parties across Europe in what some European leaders suspect is a coordinated attempt to meddle in their affairs and potentially weaken Western democracies. Many of these efforts are murky and involve obscure groups, and it is unclear whether President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has any direct involvement.
With the election of Trump as his crown jewel, Putin is clearly preparing to continue to install more puppets at the highest levels of government all over the world. With white nationalism as Putin’s chosen vehicle of influence, there’s every reason to believe Trump will follow his marching orders and whip up fear and hatred against The Other to expand his power and keep people distracted.
The comfort Trump’s administration shows allying itself with Nazi sympathizers should be sending the press into a frenzy but it’s not. They mention it in passing and move on, letting it fade into the background. It’s being left to Teen Vogue, literally a magazine for kids, to call this out as the abomination it is. None of this is normal and allowing to become so is suicidal.
