One of the only silver linings in the 2016 general election was the Maricopa County, Arizona race for sheriff. After more than two decades, the people of the county voted to end Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s reign of terror and elected a new top lawman. In true Arpaio fashion, instead of leaving office gracefully, the sheriff has decided to renew the birther nonsense.
On Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Arpaio sat in front of about forty journalists and announced that after five years of investigations his team finally have unequivocal proof that President Obama’s birth certificate is a forgery. “I hope we enlighten you what the real story and evidence is all about regarding this fake, fake birth certificate,” Arpaio told the press.
The sheriff and his Cold Case Posse then went on to present “9 points of forgery” on the birth certificate President Obama released in 2011. The department claims that the document was created by using Photoshop to copy and paste portions of another woman’s birth certificate onto it. The woman, Johanna Ah’nee, was born 19 days after Obama at the same hospital. Arpaio’s team believes that the fact that the fonts on the two documents match each other is the silver bullet they’ve been looking for. Apparently the idea that the same typewriter may have been used on two different birth certificates by Hawaii’s Department of Health is not plausible and the only obvious conclusion is that Obama’s certificate is fake.
Mike Zullo, a member of Arpaio’s posse, claimed that the team originally set out to “clear the president” but that’s not where the evidence lead them. He went on to say:
“The evidence noted herein is clear and convincing proof that the Obama certificate of live birth, posted on Whitehouse.gov on April 27, 2011 is a frauduelently manufactured document.”
When Zullo was asked by the press where he got Ah’Nee’s birth certificate from and how the team was alerted to it, he refused to answer. However, when The Arizona Republic contacted him after the news conference, Zullo admitted that he obtained the information from author and right-wing conspiracy theorist Jerome Corsi, the man who wrote a book on the subject. When the sheriff’s posse member was pressed about where Corsi received the information about Ah’Nee, Zullo responded,“I have to be honest with you, that’s a really good question. Because either that’s an unbelievable coincidence, or there’s something else going on.”
And there you have it, the “convincing proof” was obtained by talking to a random author who wasn’t at the hospital, had no connection to the Hawaii Department of Health, and has a financial stake in pushing this lie. With that kind of stellar police investigating it is no wonder there were hundreds of botched sex crimes cases in the county.
This five year long investigation is the perfect example of why Arpaio lost his last re-election bid. For years the only thing that Arpaio has been concerned with is bolstering his appeal to right-wing America by attacking President Obama and Latinos. Meanwhile, the people of his county bore the cost of civil rights lawsuit after civil rights lawsuit. The best thing the people of Maricopa County have ever done for themselves is voting this alleged criminal out of office.
