NBC’s bombshell report today is big — very, very big. According to NBC, “U.S. intelligence officials now believe with “a high level of confidence” that Russian President Vladimir Putin became personally involved in the covert Russian campaign to interfere in the U.S. presidential election”. The NBC report revealed the following:
Two senior officials with direct access to the information say new intelligence shows that Putin personally directed how hacked material from Democrats was leaked and otherwise used. The intelligence came from diplomatic sources and spies working for U.S. allies, the officials said.
Putin’s objectives were multifaceted, a high-level intelligence source told NBC News. What began as a “vendetta” against Hillary Clinton morphed into an effort to show corruption in American politics and to “split off key American allies by creating the image that [other countries] couldn’t depend on the U.S. to be a credible global leader anymore,” the official said.
The report is important because it shows that the latest intelligence confirms that the Russian leader’s involvement goes “much further than the information the U.S. was relying on in October,” when the intelligence agencies co-signed a statement attributing the Democratic National Committee hack to Russia.
It must be stated very, very clearly though that this evidence absolutely must be released to the public so that we know exactly who did what, and how. Without viewable evidence, Trump and the GOP can continue manipulating public perception through their own media disinformation channels. The NBC report continued:
The statement said officials believed that “only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.” That was an intelligence judgment based on an understanding of the Russian system of government, which Putin controls with absolute authority.
This is not direct evidence of Putin’s involvement, but with enough supporting evidence made public, the case could be extremely compelling. And if it is, there is an airtight argument that the result of the 2016 presidential election should be overturned immediately. This would most likely be achieved through the electoral college, that could then elect another candidate with clear conscience. For this to happen, the electoral college must postpone their vote on the 19th of December until they and the public has seen the intelligence.
If the situation was reversed and a foreign leader had directly directed hackers to sway public opinion against a Republican candidate, the GOP would not hesitate to use all of its power to overturn the result of the election. The Democrats should do exactly the same — and quickly before it is too late.
