Rep. King Says White Supremacist Steve Bannon Is A “Patriot”, Tells Bizarre Story of Racial Purity in Greece

Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) has a long history of saying incredibly offensive things. He once said that for every immigrant who is a valedictorian, there are a hundred more who have “calves the size of cantaloupes” because they carry drugs across the desert. He has also compared immigrants to dogs, suggested we treat them like livestock and claimed white people are superior. On Wednesday, however, King outdid himself with a series of vile statements in an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle.

During the interview, Ruhle asked the congressman how he feels about the outrage surrounding Steve Bannon’s appointment as Donald Trump’s top strategist. Bannon is the former executive publisher at Breitbart News, the go-to news source for America’s white supremacists. King told the host that he has no idea why people are so upset about Bannon’s appointment,”He is a brilliant strategist. A dedicated patriot. A historian.”

Ruhle went on to ask if that means King is fine with Bannon referring to left-leaning women “a bunch of liberal dykes.” The congressman responded:

“Well, I hadn’t heard that tape, and I don’t know what the context of it would be in,” he said. “So no, I wouldn’t say I was either OK with it or not OK with it.”

Yes, apparently a man who is supposed to represent all of the people in his district thinks it is okay in some circumstances if a White House strategists refers to women as “dykes,” a word that is tantamount to the anti-gay slur “faggot.” But it gets worse, King went on to say that a Muslim registry is “an interesting idea” and defined American values as “assimilation” and “cultural continuity.”

In a rant that eerily echoes the calls to protect the purity of the German bloodline, the congressman ended the interview bemoaning how Greece doesn’t have many blonde women anymore because Turkey’s occupation of the country watered down its racial purity:

“I was in Greece not that long ago, and I asked why, when they were digging up the statues that had their hair painted blond, why I don’t see very many blond Greeks,” King said. “The guide looked at me and said, ‘That’s what 400 years of Turkish occupation will do to you.’”

What’s so alarming about all of this is that King also expressed interest in becoming the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. That’s right, a man, who complained about racial purity in Greece, thinks a Muslim registry is a swell idea and disparaged Hispanic immigrants, wants to be the head of the department that handles immigration in America. The thought of King in that position is absolutely terrifying and we can only hope he never gets the opportunity to destroy the sacred American belief that everyone deserves an a chance to obtain the American dream no matter where they come from.
