Here’s a thought: in the wake of new horrific gun massacres destined to occur in the not so far future, Americans should try NOT praying to stop the violence.
Yes, this might sound cruel and heartless, but the fact is, this has been the only solution America’s political elite have come up with to stop a plague of insanity wreaking havoc on communities around the country — and it hasn’t worked AT ALL.
Praying sounds lovely. You pray to whichever God you happen to believe in and hope that this nightmarish psychosis magically disappears without us humans having to do anything whatsoever. It’s an easy solution for a country obsessed with convenience and on-demand consumption. Want a new iPhone? Just click a few buttons and enter your credit card details, and viola — your phone arrives a couple of days later! Need some new sneakers? Zappos.com has you covered! Want to stop your children getting slaughtered via machine gun fire while in elementary school? No problem! Just pray, and it will all go away!
Except of course, it won’t.
So let’s try a new tactic: no prayer calls from political leaders whatsoever until these gun massacres stop completely, or at least go down to the virtually non-existent level of every other civilized nation on earth. Without praying, American politicians (meaning mostly Republicans) will have to come up with actual solutions to stop terrorists, the mentally ill, and criminals getting hold of military grade weapons and shooting people.
People would be free to pray on their own or at church/mosque/synagogue etc, but they would also be encouraged not to offer it as any sort of solution to America’s rampant gun crime crisis. As the Dalai Lama recently said of terrorism:
I am a Buddhist and I believe in praying. But humans have created this problem, and now we are asking God to solve it…It is illogical. God would say, solve it yourself because you created it in the first place.
America created its own gun violence by being a nation obsessed with guns and violence. So instead of praying it will go away, let’s get rid of the damn guns — so even if America is still obsessed with violence, the actual killing part would get a whole lot harder to carry out.
