Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in Manila yesterday, President Obama took time out to thoroughly embarrass Republican governors around the nation who are demanding the US stop letting Syrian refugees into the country.
“When candidates say we shouldn’t admit 3-year old-orphans, that’s political posturing,” said Obama. “When people say we should have a religious test, and only Christians, proven Christians, should be admitted, that’s offensive, and contrary to American values.”
“These are the same folks often times that say they’re so tough that just talking to Putin or staring down ISIL or using some additional rhetoric will solve the problem — and they’re scared of widows and 3-year-old orphans.”
The profoundly un-Christian behavior from the nation’s leading Christian politicians really does reveal what lies behind the Republican mindset. To them, religion has nothing to do with spirituality or morality — it is a useful political tool with which to rally a scared population around. When Christ’s most basic lesson of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” gets translated into: “Let’s turn away starving children and send them back to a war zone,” it’s safe to say they are not “Christians” in any meaningful sense of the word.
