Yesterday, Donald Trump released a three page statement clarifying his stance on immigration. If you were expecting an apology from the real estate mogul, Trump took the opportunity to triple down on his racism by accusing Mexicans of pouring “infectious disease across the border”. He wrote:
The largest suppliers of heroin, cocaine and other illicit drugs are Mexican cartels that arrange to have Mexican immigrants trying to cross the borders and smuggle in the drugs. The Border Patrol knows this. Likewise, tremendous infectious disease is pouring across the border. The United States has become a dumping ground for Mexico and, in fact, for many other parts of the world.
Trump first got into trouble with his Presidential campaign announcement in June when he declared Mexicans coming across the border were “rapists” and “criminals”. Not content with smearing an entire country, Trump then moved on to Hispanics in general, calling them “killers and rapists” coming to America in order to pillage and plunder.
Trump’s latest statement is yet another indicator that not only is he a racist, but astonishingly stupid. Given there are close to 54 million Hispanics in the US (around 17% of the population), Trump has literally incinerated his chances of becoming President given it is a highly coveted demographic and crucial to the upcoming elections. As this chart from the U.S. Census Bureau shows, the U.S. Hispanic population, is growing at a much faster rate than the non-Hispanic population – a total nightmare for Trump:
There’s also the fact that racism these days is not well tolerated by mainstream American society – as witnessed by the election of a black President in 2008. If Trump had been running in 1960, he may have been praised for his xenophobia. Now, he’s just an old racist asshole embarking on a giant ego trip and embarrassing himself into irrelevance.
