South Korean news outlet Daily NK is reporting that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un may have executed the manager of a terrapin farm for not supplying sufficient amounts water and food to the terrapins in aquarium tanks. States the report:
“The manager was shot and killed after the Marshal (Kim Jong Un) made his field guidance tour to the terrapin farm near Taedong River in Pyongyang,” a source from the capital recently told Daily NK in a telephone call. “He was executed because some of the tanks were not adequately supplied with food and water, leading to the death of a lot of terrapins.”
Given North Koreans are subjected to the most extreme forms of violence and routinely starve to death on a regular basis, it seems somewhat hypocritical for Kim to punish someone for not supplying food to reptiles. But then Kim Jong Un is completely insane, so no news from North Korea is particularly surprising.
Kim’s brutal treatment of the terrapin farmer appears to follow a recent trend of high level purges within the country. Kim has reportedly executed 7 of his closest aids along with their families and children in recent months, along with 15 top officials including vice ministers and members of an orchestra. Kim also had his Defense Minister Hyon Yong Chol blasted to pieces by anti air craft artillery in front of a large audience for falling asleep at an event. This is spreading panic amongst the country’s elite who are not used to such levels of brutality – a sobering fact given the violence Kim’s father Kim Jong Il doled out while leading the country.
It is highly unlikely that the terrapin farm was supplied with adequate resources to run efficiently given routine power cuts that effect the country, and as Daily NK reports, they were not supplied with enough food or water to keep the animals alive anyway. Regardless, Kim has made it clear: no life in North Korea is deemed valuable by his government. Unless you are a terrapin, of course.
