This Twitter Rant By An “Obama Official” Will Probably Get Him Fired

As if the controversial Bowe Bergdahl story hasn’t already gone off on enough tangents, it has now put a mid-level public servant onto the right-wing outrage machine’s radar, and well on his way to Van Jonesville. Brandon Friedman, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and author of The War I Always Wanted: The Illusion of Glory and the Reality of War: A Screaming Eagle in Afghanistan and Iraq, went on an ill-advised Twitter rant on Wednesday, and is now being pushed by right-wing media as an “Obama Official” who called Bergdahl’s platoon mates “psychopaths.”

Fed up with the speculation and trial in absentia of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, Friedman took to Twitter to offer his own counter-narrative, complete with awesome Office Space reference and insistence that he’s no fan of speculation:

Now, there is a way to convey the fact that Bergdahl’s former platoon-mates’ recollections are partially colored by their preexisting dislike for someone they didn’t see as “fitting in,” and that there are serious inconsistencies and speculative leaps in them, and that those recollections do not constitute due process, without calling these guys psychopaths. As disaffected soldier fanfic goes, it’s also not terribly persuasive. I’d have had him slipping off the base, Hurt Locker-style, to right some wrong done to the locals he’d come to know.

The best part of this, though, is the way the conservative media is treating Friedman. The surest way to a big promotion is, apparently, to talk out your ass on Twitter, because Friedman was elevated from HUD’s equivalent of “Assistant TO The Regional Manager” to “Obama Administration Official” quicker than you can say “Twitchy.” I’d say Friedman has until precisely the moment Ed Henry asks White House Press Secretary-Designate Josh Earnest if he agrees these guys are psychopaths to clean out his desk.
