Today on Morning Joe, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the chairman of the forthcoming House Select Committee on Benghazi, pledged that he wouldn’t raise money based on the Benghazi committee while urging other members to refrain from trying to fundraise on the deaths of four Americans.
“I have never sought to raise a single penny on the backs of four murdered Americans,” the chairman said to the MSNBC panel, framing any efforts to raise money off anything Benghazi-related as being disrespectful to the America victims of the attack.
Apparently the National Republican Congressional Committee, the GOP organization tasked with electing Republican to Congress, didn’t get the word because the following appeared on an NRCC site called BenghaziWatch.com.
A link to the page went out via e-mail this morning, calling for supporters to become Benghazi Watchdogs. It’s also noteworthy that the BenghaziWatch website has a store where visitors can purchase various forms of swag — t-shirts, mousepads and the like. To their credit, there isn’t a Benghazi item… yet. So the NRCC isn’t quite as ghoulish as these people.
Though the NRCC initially stood by the fundraising message, according to The Huffington Post‘s Sam Stein, Gowdy evidently complained to the NRCC which changed the fundraising page to something having to do with defeating Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
