If passion directly correlated to intelligence Cenk Uygur would be the most astute political pundit on either side of the aisle. He always looks like he’s a couple of seconds away from trying to get his opinions across by way of a rochambo contest in the parking lot. It’s entertaining but only in the most superficial way; take away the bluster and his arguments are often the typical liberal losers we’ve come to expect from the tiny but loud Firedoglake demo.
Case in point: Yesterday Uygur went after Touré for having the temerity to suggest that Hillary Clinton has an infinitely better chance of winning the White House for the Democrats than Elizabeth Warren would. There’s obviously nothing at all controversial about saying something like this; it’s a simple statement of fact. But Uygur of course chalks that kind of talk up to the usual faux-progressive establishment defeatism, exactly the sort of thing you’d expect from Uygur’s personal corporate media white whale, MSNBC.
The salient quote:
“This is the same kind of horsecrap I’ve been hearing for the entire time we’ve been doing this show. ‘No no no, we should run weak-ass Democrats because it’s the pragmatic thing to do.’ And what do they do? They get rolled over by Republicans ’cause they’re Republican lite.”
Right. Because running a hyper-partisan makes much more sense, given that the country is divided almost in half politically. It’s not that Elizabeth Warren would make a terrible president or that she’s a lousy person — she wouldn’t and she isn’t — it’s simply that Clinton has a much better chance of winning in 2016. Again, that’s not an opinion — it’s fact. But since the left is not only excellent at but seems to revel in shooting itself in the foot over and over again, Uygur’s unicorn hunt is almost certainly going to become an article of faith in the run-up to the next presidential election.
Hillary Clinton is indeed as establishment Democrat as they come, but she’s a winner to run in 2016. Full stop. And it doesn’t matter one bit how stridently Uygur and his ilk are in bitching about her lack of true progressive bona fides and her supporters’ spineless willingness to supposedly sell out their liberal ideals, it won’t change reality. The reality is that Clinton can win and bring progressives a substantial portion of what they want. But since that’s not everything progressives want, there are always going to be idiots on the left ready to assail her at every turn and fight to ensure they get nothing.
