Oklahoma Really, Really, Really Hates Same-Sex Couples

In order to avoid providing National Guard spousal benefits to same-sex couples, per the overturning of the Defense of Marriage Act by the Supreme Court, Governor Mary Fallin, a Republican of course, has decided to eliminate spousal benefits for all National Guard couples.

The governor said, “Oklahoma law is clear. The state of Oklahoma does not recognize same-sex marriages, nor does it confer marriage benefits to same-sex couples.” She continued, “The decision reached today allows the National Guard to obey Oklahoma law without violating federal rules or policies.”

By the way, as Zack Ford wrote for ThinkProgress, Fallin isn’t the only one to take this shotgun approach to denying equal rights to same-sex couples. Catholic Charities pulled a similar stunt in Washington, DC. Meanwhile, Ford reports, the Texas Military Force is blocking same-sex couple from receiving “housing allowance at state-run National Guard facilities.” Similar shenanigans are being conducted in Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia.

Back to Oklahoma, it’s abundantly obvious that Fallin’s hatred of the gays supersedes her support for the troops. In fact, she hates marriage equality so much she’s willing to literally punish the National Guard in defiance of Defense Secretary Hagel’s orders. Wow. That’s what I call owning your bigotry.
