John Stossel Says Women Should Pay More For Health Care

Porn star mustachioed libertarian blowhard John Stossel could very well be the best example of what is wrong with America’s intellectual classes, economic system, and society in general. In a segment on Fox News, Stossel and fellow free market friend Steve Doocy talked shop about the radically anti-market nature of the Affordable Care Act, taking an opportunity to announce their beliefs that because women go to the doctor more often, they should pay more for their health care. Here’s the exchange:

Stossel: Yesterday, President Obama stood in front of a bunch of women in Massachusetts and said, “No longer will those evil insurance companies be able to charge you women more”, but, when did you last go to the doctor?

Doocy: When did I go to the doctor?

Stossel: Elisabeth can answer quite quickly. Women go to the doctor much more often than men. Maybe they’re smarter or maybe they’re hypochondriacs, who knows? If it’s insurance, you ought to be able to charge the people who use the services more. More!

Doocy (sarcastically): But John, you’re not paying attention. This president, this administration, wants to make everything fair. It’s not fair if you pay less than she does.

Stossel: It’s fair if you pay for what you use, unless you’re destitute.

Doocy: Sure. And a number of Republicans used the argument of, why should I pay for, you know, I’m in my 60′s. Why should I pay for your maternity coverage?

Stossel: Women pay for men’s Viagra.

Putting aside Stossel’s rapier like wit, it’s pretty clear from just this small excerpt of the interview that Stossel is one of the biggest assholes on the planet. A rabid follower of Ayn Rand, Stossel believes that everything in society should be about competition and self correcting markets. According to him, the cleansing power of capitalism cures all societies ills and provides a perfect mechanism to decide who should get what. In his world, women aren’t mothers, sisters, daughters, teachers, bosses or friends – they are cogs in a market system that only follow their self interest. Why should society absorb the higher cost of women’s health care when half the population don’t have babies, don’t need mammograms, and don’t need smear tests? If women need more healthcare, then Goddammit, they should pay for it!

It has seriously never occurred to John that without healthy women, there wouldn’t be healthy children. Without healthy children, there wouldn’t be the next generation of successful Americans to continue growing the country, becoming doctors, or running its schools.  This may be slightly oversimplifying things, but you get the point – there is such a thing as society and if we want it to survive, we must look after the people in it –  a concept so alien to Stossel that he would assign a dollar value to the health of his own mother, wife, and daughter.

Stossel shouldn’t be labeled anti women for his belief that they should pay more for healthcare because they use it more. He should be labeled anti human. Or maybe just an asshole.
