Jon Stewart on Government Shutdown: If Obama Can Negotiate With Iran, “Maybe He’s Not The Problem”

If it turns out that President Barack Obama can make a deal with the most intransigent, hardline, unreasonable, totalitarian mullahs in the world, but not with Republicans, maybe he’s not the problem.

– Jon Stewart on the government shutdown over Obamacare

Jon Stewart was on rare form last night, blasting Republicans for their despicable behavior over Obamacare – a law that has been vetted by virtually every facet of the American political system and ruled 100% constitutionally sound by the highest court in the land. “Everything appears to have been done literally by the book,” said Stewart. “This bill is now a law, vetted by the very system these Republicans claim to love — but to hear Republicans tell it, the whole thing could just be avoided if President Obama would just meet him halfway!”

“The bill is a fucking law!” he went on. “Are you familiar with how the word works? Did you see the Giants game on Sunday? Okay: they lost 31 to 7. And you know what the Giants didn’t say after that game? ‘If you don’t give us 25 more points by midnight on Monday, we are gonna shut down the NFL!’

The Republicans played the game, didn’t get the result they wanted, and like petulant children they literally picked up the ball and walked off the pitch. In one fell swoop, the GOP has turned the United States into a laughing stock – a country now so dysfunctional that it can’t pass basic laws that stop giant corporations wantonly jacking up insurance rates and bankrupting American citizens without bringing the entire government to a halt. The Republican Party’s argument against Obamacare goes something like this:

“Nancy Pelosi!”

“Death Panels!”

“The deficit!”

And that’s really about it. Obama has tried tirelessly to negotiate with John Boehner, Ted Cruz and the other half baked idiots in the Tea Party, but to no avail. Whatever you might think about Obama, it is undeniable that he is a very reasonable politician who has reached out over and over and over again to the Republicans in Congress in order to bet basic bill passed. On the issue of Obama’s health care bill – itself a conservative idea first conceived by the Heritage Foundation and used by Mitt Romney in Massachusetts – there is no more room to negotiate. It passed and is now a law. End of discussion.

What options does Obama have left when it comes to running the country? The Republicans have set a very dangerous precedent that essentially makes Obama’s job impossible. They will literally shut the country down if they don’t get what they want.

How does America get its government back on track in the face of what now must be labeled a terrorist party bent on taking Obama down no matter what he does?

Sadly, there don’t seem to be many good options.
