Quote of the Day: “There Is No Post-Civil War Precedent For What The House GOP Is Doing Now”

James Fallows weighs in on the astonishing behavior of the GOP and their threats to shut the government down over the funding of Obamacare:

This isn’t “gridlock.” It is a ferocious struggle within one party, between its traditionalists and its radical factions, with results that unfortunately can harm all the rest of us — and, should there be a debt default, could harm the rest of the world too….

In case the point is not clear yet: there is no post-Civil War precedent for what the House GOP is doing now. It is radical, and dangerous for the economy and our process of government, and its departure from past political disagreements can’t be buffed away or ignored.

I think it’s incredibly important to correctly identify what the Republican Party is doing right now. It most certainly isn’t ‘politics as usual’ – the GOP is engaging in economic terrorism and is holding the public hostage in order to get what it wants. The current incarnation of the Republican Party can no longer be considered a political party. It is an incredibly dangerous public relations instrument of private power that threatens to destroy what is left of the US government. If it is not stopped, there’s no limit to the damage they can do. It’s now down to the ‘moderates’ like John McCain to take them on, not only for the sake of the party, but the country itself.
