It’s true that it’s not the press’s job to “sell” White House initiatives, but it absolutely is the job of the press to separate fact from fiction and communicate the truth of any matter as opposed to simply being a dutiful stenographer who reports, word-for-word, each side’s spin and calls it objectivity.
In the face of a coordinated campaign of misinformation and bullshit, journalists are the public’s only defense. Their responsibility should always be to fact-check what comes out of the mouths of our leaders and provide the necessary context. Sure, if the White House wants to message the Affordable Care Act in a certain way it’s not the responsibility of the media to help it out, but it is up to the media to correct any lies told about it in the name of scoring political points.
Not doing so is a dereliction of duty.
