Why Can’t Ben Affleck Be Batman?

Ben Affleck has been signed up for a string of Batman and Justice League films in the last week, and it seems casting him in this role has not been warmly received.

Who knew people cared so much about Batman?

Director Joss Whedon reassures fans that he’s “got the chops.” And most importantly, he’s “got the chin.” What Joss doesn’t specify is what sort of chin this is? Large? Small? Hittable? Not hittable?

Anyway, I digress.

John Roden, clearly a huge Batman fan, set up a petition on change.org to make sure he was not the only one who thinks Affleck is the wrong choice and turns out he’s right. Over 50,000 others agree. And it’s obviously very serious business. Especially, it seems, Affleck’s build.

He writes: “His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won’t do the role justice. He’s not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of batman. His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he’s not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.”

But fear not Affleck fans. His good pal Matt Damon has come to the rescue, sort of…

“He’s not playing King Lear. It’s Batman. Certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw Argo or The Town and all the work he’s been doing lately, it’s way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult that Batman.”

And then starts not being so helpful to his good pal…

“Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kind of gruff voice at people. I won’t be Robin.”

I don’t think that saying how easy it is to play Batman is really helping the situation, Matt…But on the plus side, it seems that fans shouldn’t be worried at all. Christian Bale can simply tell Ben how to put that gruff voice on and how many times a day needs to go to the gym.
