Today I’m doing you the favor of reading Fox News’s website so you don’t have to. Feel free to forgo any thanks in favor of donations to my PayPal account which will immediately go toward my medical care. Now keep in mind, I’m talking about the actual Fox News site, not Fox Nation — the one comically billed as the specialized “opinion” face of Fox — so of course you can expect that since Fox News is the “fair and balanced” network there will be less Alex Jonesian lunatic ranting, fewer hysterical cries about the dangers of Sharia Law and creeping socialism, and a more even-handed and civil discussion of the events of the day, minus demands for anyone not to the right of G. Gordon Liddy to kindly pack up his or her things and move to Cuba, right? Sure thing.
You probably remember Sally Kohn as the freelance Fox contributor who famously called out Paul Ryan’s RNC address for being, as she said in a piece that drew a whole hell of a lot of publicity, “an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech.” The beauty of that Kohn column was that it gave center-left political watchers the ability to crow about how even Fox News had to admit that Ryan was entirely full of shit.
There’s no doubt that Kohn’s the one liberal bulldog under the Fox News tent who can actually put up a fight against the regular onslaught of conservative nonsense that comes from the network, even if she is relegated almost entirely to the Fox website. And now she’s at it again, writing a piece for Fox’s primary online outlet that effusively praises President Obama’s State of the Union address last night and dares to suggest that congressional Republicans — who’ve raised obstructionism to an art form that would make DaVinci genuflect — need to knock it off with the bitching and cooperate with Obama for the good of the country. Kohn points out the polling which shows that most Americans agree with the president on issues of immigration reform, the promotion of new initiatives to strengthen our schools and public infrastructure, a willingness to tackle the climate crisis, and of course, common sense gun control. Basically, she argues that Republican obstinacy puts them squarely on the wrong side of both public opinion and history.
About Marco Rubio’s official GOP response to the State of the Union address, she says this:
“Obviously in crafting his Republican response, Senator Marco Rubio was keenly aware of his party’s dwindling oxygen. Rubio struggled to re-cast himself and his fellow conservatives as the defenders of working people and immigrants. But while Rubio repeatedly suggested Republicans agree with President Obama’s assessment of the problems we face as a nation, he repeatedly made clear Republicans remain opposed to any reasonable solutions. Meanwhile polls continue to show that the majority of Americans still believe the Republican Party is too invested in protecting the interests of the wealthy at the expense of the rest of us. One speech can’t change that. Even in Spanish. The Republican Party should be less worried about its image and more worried about its substance. No party that dismantles the American Jobs Act, blocks the Violence Against Women Act and defeats the DREAM Act can expect to win the hearts and minds of mainstream America, let alone a governing majority.”
Now if you just read the above sentiment and found yourself slowly, involuntarily cringing, drawing your arms inward and retreating away from the screen the way you would if you watched somebody drop a chihuahua into a ring of pit bulls that had been starved in preparation for a dog fight, trust me — you have no idea.
Behold the fury of the Fox News faithful in the comment section of Kohn’s column:
“I DO wish Fox would quit wasting bandwidth by posting Sally Kohn’s DRIVEL! The woman is obviously from the same planet as her Messiah, Obama. Republicans cooperate? Lady, (and I use the term loosely) they have bent over BACKWARDS to compromise and we conservatives do not like it. Obama is not God and not yet a dictator altho he is clearly going in that direction.”
“The president needs ot be impeached and no body has the guts to go after him. His executive orders are direct violations of his constutional duties, he is an executive, not a legislator.”
“If we are going to be truthful here…..[Obama’s] majority is really 98% of [African-Americans] in the state [of Illinois] with similar percentages across the nation. Now….. that is racism by the true meaning of the word.”
— Embarrassed Illinoisian
“Riiiight,, we should ALL just bend over and take it from behind and be proud to live like slaves on the gubmint Plantation like helpless leeches… stop saying the Marxist traitor has 52% [of the election vote],,, you can’t possibly count the voter fraud via 130% turnouts (with Zero votes for Romney in black S. Philly etc.) and the 10 Million + Illegals that all voted for him in CA, AZ etc….”
— Mort Leith
“Cooperate with Marxist ideaology, I do not think so. get rid of the saftey net period and you will get rid of the illegal immigration problem when Americans would be forced to those tough jobs or face starvation like they did in the Great Dperession”
“I may… quit reading fox news if they cant hire someone who is a little less idolising a jerk who is out to ruin the country. sorry if this offends you, but i dout it will git thru your thick skull.”
“Go research Marxism and then come back to us singing Barry’s praises. He is only allowed to lead us around by our collective noses because of the sins of our fathers. Our guilt ridden psyches have finally come home to roost. Oh those crazy confederates, if they only knew.”
“Nothing like another Obama water carrying drone from PRAVDA USA like Kohn telling those still capable of rational thought that we have to follow her leader into a bottomless pit of skyrocketing unsustainable debt, unemployment rate in the double digits taking into account all those who, out of despair, have dropped out of the work force, what’s that under Obama, and the unilateral disarming of our military both materially and morally by using it for social engineering experiments that trash the freedom of religion rights of the Chaplain Corps and all whom they serve, else, she will have a tantrum! Sorry, Kohn, REAL Americans who love their country are going to resist Obama to his face because he’s willfully destroying it. And if that bothers you, well that’s just tough!”
“No way will I ‘cooperate with Obama’ if it means making this man a virtual king. Sally, go pack sand, particularly on some beach in Communist Cuba.”
— J Marconi
“Sally Kohn=Communist Jew looking FORWARD to the destruction of America..”
— Rob Wilson
“How in the world did this person get hired to publish this crap. She doesn’t have a clue and is probably one of the dumbest commentators yet. Where do we get such ‘Wo’men?”
“Hey Fox!!!! You’re publishing this drivel why?”
That last comment is really the most revealing one because it tips a hand to the well-established fact that Fox News viewers watch the network religiously precisely so they never have to hear any worldview but the one they already subscribe to. Despite how it failed them completely in the lead-up to the 2012 election by constructing the epistemic bubble around them and continuing to fill it with white noise, they still consider it “their” network — the only one bringing them the truth as they see it.
It’s worth noting, by the way, that while I did exclude some of the longer and meatier — though no less outraged — comments that attempted to refute Kohn, almost every single person who responded to the article was pro-Republican and anti-Obama. Almost every single one. Come to think of it, I don’t think there were any pro-Obama comments at all, merely one or two willing to cop to agreeing with something Kohn had to say or that congratulated Fox News for being so daring as to publish Kohn’s thoughts in the first place.
And with that, my public service for the day is performed. I’m going to go take an aspirin and lie down now.
