In last night’s debate, Mitt Romney told the President: “Syria is Iran’s only ally in the Arab world. It’s their route to the sea.”
Couple of things to point out here. Firstly, as the map above shows, Syria is clearly not Iran’s route to the sea given an entire country divides them (Iraq or Iran depending on where you are). Secondly, Iran has sea on two of its borders – the eastern edge of the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, leading directly to the Indian Ocean.
Look, both the President and Mitt Romney were pretty awful on foreign policy in my opinion – it was an aggressive foreign policy vs a very aggressive foreign policy last night. But when one candidate has confused knowledge of the region he is proposing to threaten and send troops to, there should be some serious cause for concern. A basic knowledge of the where America’s official enemies are should really be a a must if you’re thinking about becoming President….
