This is not going to do much good for Israel’s already battered international standing. From the AP:
Israeli commandos on Monday stormed six ships carrying hundreds of
pro-Palestinian activists on an aid mission to the blockaded Gaza Strip,
killing at least 10 people and wounding dozens after encountering
unexpected resistance as the forces boarded the vessels.
The operation in international waters off the Gaza coast was a
nightmare scenario for Israel that looked certain to further damage its
international standing, strain already tense relations with Turkey and
draw unwanted attention to Gaza’s plight.
There are conflicting stories as to exactly what happened (check out an interesting Al Jazeera story here), but given the event took place in international waters, Israel is ultimately responsible and stands to take immense criticism for its reckless behavior. The attack is another indication that the Jewish state is spiraling out of control. Its increased viciousness and hardening stance towards the Palestinians signals a paranoia that will ultimately destroy any chance of a peaceful settlement and will condemn the region to a state of perpetual war.
