This article from the ever useful pambazuka news gives an interesting account of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) and its prescient report on Kenya two years before the current political crisis. The APRM is an imperfect continental developent initiative rooted in the African Union (AU). Under the agreement, APRM signatory countries undergo periodic reviews of political, economic and corporate governance, and economic development. Followed by non-binding policy recommendations. Given Africa’s rising geo-political status – i.e. access to resources, global war on terror, rise of China, growing African markets – efforts to ensure stability on the continent are acquiring a new global significance.
