The right has made a denying climate change a centerpiece of what passes for their ideology for years. But few of them have made themselves look quite as stupid as Rush Limbaugh.
The Midwest is about to be slammed with some of the coldest weather on record and people are going to die. With temperatures plummeting to -30 degrees and wind chills expected to bring it even lower to a dangerous -60 in some areas, the National Weather Service is warning the public to stay inside to avoid frostbite and hypothermia which could set in within minutes, possibly seconds.
This is because of a polar vortex that is sweeping over the middle of the country like the ice hurricane from The Day After Tomorrow. If you're still not sure what a polar vortex is, it's not really that complicated.
Naturally, Trump is making fun of this deadly drop in temperature that it putting millions of people at risk of injury or death because, hahaha, global warming is fake!
Trump is a moron that doesn't know the difference between weather and climate and couldn't figure it out with the help of the smartest scientists in the world at his disposal, which he actually has. But Trump doesn't hold a (frozen) candle to the sheer stupidity of Rush Limbaugh back in 2014, when the phrase "polar vortex" first entered the public's consciousness.
We are having a record-breaking cold snap in many parts of the country. And right on schedule the media have to come up with a way to make it sound like it's completely unprecedented. Because they've got to find a way to attach this to the global warming agenda, and they have. It's called the "polar vortex." The dreaded polar vortex.
Do you know what the polar vortex is? Have you ever heard of it? Well, they just created it for this week...They're in the middle of a hoax, they're perpetrating a hoax, but they're relying on their total dominance of the media to lie to you each and every day about climate change and global warming.
This was slapped down later the same day by, of all people, Al Roker:
Score one for science! But did it really make a difference? Actually, yes. For once, it did. After Limbaugh was publicly humiliated by Al "that weather guy from TV" Roker, no one ever claimed that the polar vortex was a hoax again. I'm sure in the fever swamps of the internet you can still find some of Rush's moron brigade claiming it is but it's hard to cling to that when it keeps happening and the weather maps inevitably look like a giant ball of ice:
Seriously, what else are you going to call a massive spinning globe of freezing air from the north pole? A happy funtime snow ball?
Limbaugh and Trump and the rest of their ilk are playing to a base blinded by years of propaganda from Fox News, AM Hate Radio, and right wing hate sites. Although in Trump's case he almost certainly believes what he's spewing because he's one of the people that's swallowed the propaganda hook, line, and sinker. Also, he's incredibly stupid. The goal here is not to present the "truth" to the base but to keep them angry and suspicious of science and the government. It's the same dynamic cults use to keep their members isolated and under control. Everyone is lying to you except your leaders. Trust no one but us. Obey no one but us.
Sometimes the propagandists overreach and the propaganda fails but the right is so throughly enmeshed in the cult that it doesn't matter. They'll just pretend it never happened and move on to the next lie. Even as California burned, the South flooded, and now the midwest freezes, they'll read Trump's tweet and laugh themselves silly at how clever the president is. He really showed them libs who's boss! Then they'll wait for their FEMA check to clear because their home was destroyed in a once-in-a-century natural disaster for the second time in four years. MAGA.
