Donald Trump's new best friend Sen. Lindsey Graham took to Twitter today to excuse president's obvious culpability in the mail bomb fiasco by throwing Sen. Bernie Sanders under the bus.
"I didn’t blame Bernie Sanders when a Bernie supporter shot Congressman Steve Scalise," tweeted Graham. "And I’m not going to blame President @realDonaldTrump for this nut job. I blame the individual(s) responsible –- not someone else."
Let's review this for a second. How many times has Bernie Sanders:
a) Advocated protesters be beaten up at his rallies
b) Tweeted videos of himself engaging in extreme acts of simulated violence:
c) Praised politicians for beating up journalists
d) Encouraged police to physically assault suspects
e) Threatened to lock up political opponents
f) Bragged about grabbing women by the genitals
g) Said the media were the “enemy of the people”
h) Praised Neo Nazis and White Supremacists as being "fine people"
The most extreme thing Sanders has done in his decades long political career is to call for universal health care and free college for all Americans. When someone carries out an act of violence in his name, he is not responsible in any conceivable way. When someone carries out an act of violence in Trump's name, that person is merely following the president's orders and his example.
Lindsey Graham has become the new darling of the Trump right -- discarding his dignity in order to remain relevant in a new era of political extremism. This means he can make an obviously ridiculous comparison like the one above without any sense of shame. Graham, like his deceased friend John McCain, had been part of a very small minority of Republicans willing to speak out about Trump's insanity and toxic effect on politics in America. That version of Graham is now gone, and the man in his place now exists to help normalize Trump and his abhorrent behavior.
There are no comparisons to be made with Trump and any other Democrat when it comes to stoking acts of political violence. None. Trump has wrecked civility in Washington perhaps forever, and he has used the most disgusting language to foment divide between gender, race, religion, and political identity. The mail bomber is attacking Trump's opponents because Trump has urged his supporters to do just that. Lindsey Graham knows this full well, but he has also tied his political career to Trumpism. He is up for re-election to the Senate in 2020, and now we know what type of conservatism he will be offering the people of South Carolina.
