Democrats Need to Loudly Push for the Impeachment of Donald Trump Right Now

Democrats: Desperate times requires desperate measures.

It’s been clear for a long time now that Democratic Leadership wanted no part of impeachment talk until Special Counsel Robert Mueller presents the Department of Justice and the American people his final report on the Russian investigation. From the very beginning, I questioned this tactical strategy because it has allowed the Republican Party’s shameful complicity and co-conspiratorial negligence to feel like a political calculation, rather than the national security crisis of historic proportion that their actions represent.

This non-aggressive strategy of deference and inaction has produced a somewhat effective strategy of collective Republican silence as the president commits constitutional violations every day that he wakes up in the morning. If anything, this tactic has led to more confusion for the public about our degree of election vulnerability to foreign interference, what constitutes an impeachable offense, and has placed Robert Mueller and Rod Rosenstein at greater risk for termination by a lawless president.

But if there was a moment that should force the Democratic Party to abandon the strategy of reticence and change the contours of the debate regarding Trump’s obstruction, it happened with this tweet from the president:

“Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!”

No, America, the president admitting that his son Donald Trump Jr. committed conspiracy to defraud the United States with the intent of obtaining negative information on a political opponent from a foreign, adversarial power is not legal, nor done in politics all the time. Aside from the fact that Donald Trump has strengthened a future perjury case against his son, Trump added another layer of evidence to highlight Trump’s lengthy history of obstruction and corrupt intent. When you help your son draft the statement that lies about the reason for the meeting with the Russians, that’s corrupt intent. When you fire a former FBI director and brag about it to the Russians for the world to see, that’s corrupt intent. When you try and intimidate that same FBI director into silence by threatening that you have recorded tapes, that’s corrupt intent. The list goes on and on.

It’s time for the Democratic Party to aggressively coordinate a strategy of offense and put Donald Trump and the Republican Party on defense between now and the midterms. Part of this strategy should include making the compelling argument that Donald Trump should be impeached now. Democrats have so much evidence in the public domain to substantiate, at the very least, a political case for obstruction of justice and the impeachment that should result from it.

If the Democratic Party decided, for example, to stand as a unified party, every day in front of the Capitol Building and speak about Donald Trump’s obstruction, it would garner national attention. The Democrats would likely create more public pressure and put Republicans on the defensive by having prepared speeches with simple, straightforward talking points with blown up Trump tweets, lies and contradictions. The Democratic Party could help the American public understand, in stark terms that what is happening is unprecedented in American politics.

The Democratic Party could have a Round Robin of mental health experts discuss what malignant narcissism is and how it relates to power, priorities and actions related to Trump’s obstruction of justice. The Democratic Party has had some consistent voices of alarm coming from Congressmen Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, but it’s not enough. With more conviction, coordination and commitment, a new approach would also provide Robert Mueller and Rod Rosenstein more protection due to greater public awareness and forced media coverage on Democrats patriotic strategy.

The Democratic leadership’s reliance on a blue wave without taking a principled stand against presidential recklessness and corruption is a risky proposition given our current political and racial climate. America needs leaders and patriots in the best sense of the word.

Democrats, playing it safe increases the abuse of power, not lessen it. Be bold, be real. Decent Americans will support you. Your task is easy, there is a traitor in the White House. Now go ahead and do what you were elected to do in the face of tyranny.
