When we first learned of the cruelty of the Trump regime's family separation policy, it immediately occurred to me that these children, some as young as three months old, were going to be abused, not by accident, but deliberately. And god fucking dammit, I was right:
Olivia Caceres was separated from her 1-year-old son in November at a legal point of entry. The boy’s father, who was seeking asylum, remains detained, Caceres said. It took three months for Caceres to get her son back from government custody. According to her testimony, she said that after reuniting with her toddler, “he continued to cry when we got home and would hold on to my leg and would not let me go. When I took off his clothes he was full of dirt and lice. It seemed like they had not bathed him the 85 days he was away from us.”
“[The children] did not have shoes or blankets in the detention center, and there were people in the cells that had to sleep standing up. They did not have enough to eat either, and could not drink the water, because of the chlorine they added to it … the incarcerated children were insulted – called named such as “animals” and “donkeys.”
Alma Poletti, an investigator for Washington’s attorney general, interviewed eight children who were separated from their families and sent to the Seattle area for care and detention. “The place was freezing …The girls placed their mats in the floor very close to one another, since there was not enough space to fit them more comfortably. Girls as young as 3 years old were detained in this place and without their mothers,” Poletti wrote. She said one girl, 14, referred to as “G,” “felt hungry most of the time she was there because the food they provided her wasn’t good in quality or quantity.” “G” couldn’t sleep through the night, Poletti added.
Trump and the soulless monsters doing his bidding in ICE have stolen thousands of children and put them in overcrowded, underfunded, understaffed facilities run by people who apparently despise the children in their charge. No rational or moral human allows a 1-year-old to go without a bath and clean clothes. You do not look at children and think, "Eh, we're the richest country in the world but we don't really have to feed them enough to keep them from being hungry all the time."
If you'll recall a story from a few weeks ago, one little girl was left so unsupervised that the older girls in her prison cell had to learn how to change her diaper. If the girls hadn't done this or if they had been too young to do it themselves, the little girl would have been left to wallow in her own filth. How long before she would have developed an infection and become seriously ill? How many others did exactly that happen to?
As time goes by, we're going to find out how widespread the abuse is. I guarantee we're going to find out that at least one location was pimping out the girls because oversight is nonexistent. I also guarantee we're going to find out that several of the children died from lack of care and the government is covering it up. Don't be surprised to hear it was related to "gang violence" even though the victims will be young children. There is no lie too horrific for the Trump regime.
The two worst parts of this are that the Trump regime will not care and that white Republican voters will care even less. It will be up to others to pursue the truth and demand justice. Jeff Sessions, America's first Confederate Attorney General, will not lift a finger to hold anyone accountable. And ICE? Well, I'm sure they'll investigate themselves and find themselves 100% blameless.
As for Trump's white Republican voters? Never forget, they defended and cheered tearing babies from their mothers and putting them in cages. They loved the idea of torturing children in order to punish their brown parents. They will learn of the abuse and cruelty being heaped upon defenseless children and respond the same way. At the absolute minimum, they will make a million excuses to keep the Trump regime from being held responsible. Many of them, however, will wallow in the sick joy of knowing brown parents are suffering. White Republican voters don't consider them to be people anyway and their hatred of the "invaders" is bottomless.
This story is going to get so much worse than we can imagine and the people who are making it happen are already convinced they will never pay a price for their evil. It's up to us to replace the complicit Republican Party and prove them wrong. We are no longer a nation that tortures children with brown skin to feed the hatred of white people. We're better than this and we're better than them. We have to restore the rule of law in America or there won't be an America. All we'll have left is a twisted reflection of a once great nation that revels in the death and suffering of children for the amusement of monsters.
