Jeff Sessions Is Using The Bible To Justify White Nationalism. So Did The Confederacy and The Nazis

When monsters run out of excuses, they always turn to the Bible to justify their atrocities.

Now that we've reached the morally indefensible stage of fascism, the part where we put children into concentration camps, the Trump administration is citing the Bible to defend what common sense tells us cannot be defended:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday used a Bible verse to defend his department’s policy of prosecuting everyone who crosses the border from Mexico, suggesting that God supports the government in separating immigrant parents from their children.

“I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained the government for his purposes,” Sessions said during a speech to law enforcement officers in Fort Wayne, Ind. “Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves. Consistent and fair application of the law is in itself a good and moral thing, and that protects the weak and protects the lawful.”

Sarah Huckabee Sanders followed that up by claiming that upholding the law is, in fact, biblical:

“I can say that it is very biblical to enforce the law. That is actually repeated a number of times throughout the Bible,” she said. “It’s a moral policy to follow and enforce the law.”

Curiously, no one can explain what law is being upheld when children are ripped screaming from mothers and fathers legally seeking asylum. Surely that must be an oversight and they'll get back to us....

Hiding behind the Bible isn't new....

It's important to note that there are two other governments in modern history notorious for using Christianity to justify atrocities against minorities. They were the genocidal Nazis and the pro-slavery Confederacy. What fine company we're keeping these days.

The slavers and traitors of the Confederacy loved to point out the biblical origins of the "inferiority" of blacks. Here's the Vice-President of the Confederacy Alexander Stephens in his infamous Cornerstone speech doing exactly that:

With us, all of the white race, however high or low, rich or poor, are equal in the eye of the law. Not so with the negro. Subordination is his place. He, by nature, or by the curse against Canaan, is fitted for that condition which he occupies in our system. The architect, in the construction of buildings, lays the foundation with the proper material-the granite; then comes the brick or the marble. The substratum of our society is made of the material fitted by nature for it, and by experience we know that it is best, not only for the superior, but for the inferior race, that it should be so. It is, indeed, in conformity with the ordinance of the Creator. It is not for us to inquire into the wisdom of His ordinances, or to question them. For His own purposes, He has made one race to differ from another, as He has made “one star to differ from another star in glory.”

See? Negroes are inferior and meant to be slaves because God made them that way. Who are we to question the will of God? Especially the part where God says to rape, torture, and murder blacks. It must be in the Bible somewhere if you look hard enough.

I did Nazi see that coming (wait, yes I did)

Adolf Hitler was explicit that his war on Jews was at the direction of God himself:

“I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord’s work.” - [Adolph Hitler, Speech, Reichstag, 1936]

“And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of his estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary, He drove those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God.” - [Adolph Hitler, _Mein Kampf_, pp.174]

“….the personification of the devil as the symbol of all evil assumes the living shape of the Jew.” - [Adolf Hitler, “Mein Kampf”, Vol. 1, Chapter 11, precisely echoing Martin Luther’s teachings]

It's weird that Jesus would be antisemitic, himself being a Jew and considering himself one until his death. But Nazis were not exactly rational people so what can you do?

If your moral and rhetorical counterparts are the worst villains America has faced in its two and half centuries of existence, there's a good chance you're doing something monstrous. It's not a coincidence that neo-Confederates and neo-Nazis both openly march in support of a regime that claims the Bible as justification for escalating atrocities. They all recognize a kindred spirit within each other. With the Bible as their inspiration, there is no limit to the horrors they can visit on their enemies in the name of God.

This is just the beginning unless we take back Congress and put a stop to the madness.
