White nationalist site Breitbart.com has a hell of a time coming up with news stories that a) do not cast Donald Trump in a negative light and b) perpetuate their narrative that the West is under siege from rampaging Muslims and violent brown people.

So what does the crack team at Breitbart HQ do when Donald Trump quite literally declares himself above the law, and Paul Manafort gets accused by Robert Mueller of attempting to tamper with witnesses in his federal tax and money laundering case?

Report on nasty Muslim criminals in....London?:

The story is admittedly horrific, and coming from London myself, particularly upsetting. But when you bear in mind that 1,300 children are shot to death in America every year, it seems a little odd that Breitbart would choose the stabbing of a woman and her child in another country as the feature piece for the site.

One quick glance at the comments section tells you all you need to know about the editorial decision:

"Brown turds"

"The Brown clown"

"Mayor Khan of Londonistan"

Remember, this is the go-to website for Trump supporters -- their version of the Huffington Post or The New York Times. If you read this stuff everyday, you would no doubt believe Muslims were on their way to taking over Britain and forcing everyone to live in an Islamic Caliphate. The paranoid mania on display daily at Breitbart.com isn't just a money making scheme, but indicative of a deeply disturbed editorial team who may actually believe the garbage they put out and pass off as serious commentary.

While the stories they select are not fake per se, the selection reflects the the peculiar interests of the journalists. You can quite easily imagine Breitbart columnists checking under their floorboards at home for families of illegal immigrants, or filing police reports on Muslim looking neighbors for cooking foreign smelling food/speaking in strange languages.

At the Banter, our story selection is based on what the team thinks the most relevant, serious stories are of the day. For example, if the President of the United States declares himself above the law, then we are going to have something to say about it. Most serious publications operate this way and do not create an editorial strategy based on perpetuating a particular ideology. Breitbart however, exists solely to support Donald Trump and promote a bizarro-world reality where white people are victims and brown people and feminists are plotting to overthrow Western Civilization.

We won't ever link to Breitbart as we don't want to give them any unnecessary attention, but sadly they are a major force in the American media landscape and must be monitored for the damage they do to civil society. After the departure of Steve Bannon, one hoped Breitbart might pivot towards reality based journalism. But it seems they know what their audience wants and are content to throw them as much red meat as possible.

UPDATE: It turns out the author of the piece, Virginia Hale, is a know white nationalist with an extensive background in hateful speech. Reports Media Matters: "Hale, who says her job is to document the “ruin brought to” Europe “by invaders,” has tweeted that black and Arab people are more prone to violence because of their IQs and that Hispanic people are violent because they’re descendants of Aztecs and Incas." How lovely.
