Fox News has always been a propaganda outfit and in the days after 9/11, they instituted a brand of "toxic patriotism" in which anyone who questioned a Republican president was essentially committing treason. In the Error of Trump, they're taking it to the limit by openly inciting violence against Robert Mueller, the Democratic Party, the FBI, and anyone investigating Trump by saying, out loud, that we're in the middle of a "coup".
Fox News host Jesse Watters told viewers the investigation into Trump’s campaign “has been crooked from the jump.”
“But the scary part is we may now have proof the investigation was weaponized to destroy his presidency for partisan political purposes and to disenfranchise millions of American voters,” Watters said. “Now, if that’s true, we have a coup on our hands in America.”
As counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway spoke to Watters, a chyron appeared on the screen with the words “a coup in America?”
This is ratings gold for Fox because it will keep their elderly viewers terrified and glued to their seats watching Viagra and catheter commercials. It's also a message to Trump, Fox's Number One Fan, that he needs to bypass the Constitution and make himself an unaccountable dictator. They know trump can be easily manipulated by what they say and what they are saying is this: The "deep state" is trying to seize control of the country and the only way to stop them is to seize control for yourself first.
The seething hatred Fox has for American democracy is hard to put into words. They know that conservatism has become so vile and poisonous that they've lost, for all time, the war of ideas. All that remains now is ending democracy and keeping the left from legally retaking the power the right has been stealing for years. And why not? Think of how a Republican "president" no longer held to the rule of law could further the Fox News agenda.
Trump could simply cancel elections when it looks like Republicans will lose. He could remove liberal judges and fill the courts with right wing extremists. He could have "political dissidents" arrested because they have evidence (that's not at all manufactured) that they were plotting terrorist acts. Unfriendly newspapers, websites and cable news networks could be shut down for colluding with foreign enemies (no manufactured evidence here, either. Honest!). Every single corporate regulation could be scrapped...for the right price, of course. And tax cuts for the rich so they can do...something for the economy. Who cares? Anyone who reports negative information will be shut down or arrested so let the economy tank. Trump's fully corrupted departments will just cook the books and lie about how great everything is, anyway.
It's no secret that the right only loves America when they control it and resent it when they have to share but this is something else. They want Trump to declare himself the lawless tyrant they once screamed bloody murder about Obama being. Afterwards, they'll hold him up as a paragon of law and order as he proceeds to shred the very concept. The right loves an unaccountable dictator as long as it's their unaccountable dictator.
But Fox should be careful what it wishes for. America, like the human body, can only tolerate so much poison in its system before it violently reacts. Attempting to overthrow the constitutional systems explicitly put into place to contain a criminal like Trump will trigger that reaction and it's not at all clear that when the smoke clears, Fox News will still be on the air. When the people finally have enough of the corruption destroying their lives, they come for the collaborators as well as the monsters in charge. Fox will survive the impeachment of Trump. There's no guarantee it will survive his removal if he tries to crown himself King of America and declares war on more than half the country.
There are 322 days left to the 2018 elections.
