Trump's "Lie of the Year" Should be a Wake Up Call to the Far Left

For too long, people calling themselves progressives have aped Trump's "Russiagate is fake news" lie out of hatred for the Democratic Party. Time to get over 2016 and move on. Democracy is hanging by a thread.

On Tuesday, Politifact named Trump the "Winner" of 2017's Lie of the Year for denying that Russia interfered in the 2016 election:

A mountain of evidence points to a single fact: Russia meddled in the U.S. presidential election of 2016.

In both classified and public reports, U.S. intelligence agencies have said Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered actions to interfere with the election. Those actions included the cyber-theft of private data, the placement of propaganda against particular candidates, and an overall effort to undermine public faith in the U.S. democratic process.

Members of Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, have held open and closed door hearings to probe Russia’s actions. The congressional investigations are ongoing.

Facebook, Google and Twitter have investigated their own networks, and their executives have concluded — in some cases after initial foot-dragging — that Russia used the online platforms in attempts to influence the election.

After all this, one man keeps saying it didn’t even happen.

That man would be Trump, of course. Trump's rabid followers naturally also insist it didn't happen because if Trump told them the sky was green, they'd gouge their eyes out for lying to them. Fox News, AM Hate Radio and right wing hate sites refuse to admit Russia attacked the United States as well because they all have a vested interest in protecting the legitimacy of Trump's presidency.

But then there's the Greenwalds and other far left Russiagate deniers who also refuse to acknowledge reality. Their refusal is not fueled by loyalty to Trump but rather by a burning hatred for the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton. They have a narrative that Trump won because Hillary was a terrible candidate and the DNC was evil and corrupt. Accepting the interference of Russia means putting that narrative at risk and they will not do that.

In other words, it's more important to cling to that hatred than it is to uncover the full extent of Russia's involvement. They nursed that grudge against Hillary and the Democrats in the general election and it helped put Trump in office, now they're poised to finish the job by giving Trump a pass when he fires Special Consul Robert Mueller.

After all, if the entire investigation is a fraud according to the far left, why make a fuss when Trump illegally shuts it down?

One would think it's obvious that once Trump succeeds in literally declaring himself above the law with the full support of all three branches of government, there's absolutely nothing to stop him from simply canceling elections, arresting political opponents, and turning the United States into the fascist dictatorship the far left constantly screams about when Democrats are in charge.

One would think.

But it's not at all clear that the far left would bat an eye at this development. For far too many of them, Trump in the White House causing chaos is desirable either as payback to the "corrupt" Democrats or as an end to American imperialism to be replaced by unicorns and rainbows and not massive global chaos and bloodshed. Somehow, in this amazingly well thought out calculation, the oppression and cruelty of the new order won't reach them before the revolution breaks out and a progressive utopia is established where they'll be hailed as heroes.

Good luck with that.

The far left has a choice to make and they have to make it right now: Get over 2016 and start fighting Trump's inevitable attempt to declare himself an unaccountable tyrant or bask in the spite of "getting even" with the Democrats as their right to assemble, protest, vote, and petition their government is stripped away. One option gives them a chance to make the world a better place, the other guarantees everything they care about will burn.

Shaun King made his choice and he was about as anti-Democratic Party as you can get. But in the face of a greater threat, he got over 2016. It's time for the rest of the far left to do it, too.

There are 328 days left before the 2018 elections.
