While the left is still reeling from the abominable tax plan just passed by the Republican Party, NY Mag's Jonathan Chait points out that in the long term, this is about the best thing that could have ever happened to the Democrats. Why? Midterms, midterms, midterms. The policy is so unpopular, so divisive and so destructive that the Democrats can use it to hammer Republicans for months to come.

As Chait notes the tax cut is "the second-most-unpopular major piece of legislation in recorded history". He continues:

Democrats have nothing to fear from making repeal of the Trump tax cuts for the rich a defining party plank. On the contrary, they have a great deal to gain. The bill is a cash grab by the wealthy, driven by the demands of the Republican donor base, and stuffed with targeted favors for insiders with lobbyists. Many more are sure to surface. The more they talk about it, the more Democrats can drive home the message that Trump’s economic populism was a fraud.

In the 2020 campaign, Democrats are inevitably going to propose new social spending. Reporters are inevitably going to ask them how they plan to pay for it. Republicans have given them an easy answer: Repeal the Trump tax cuts for the rich.

It is important to note that the tax cuts are not permanent and can be undone as soon as Democrats gain power. And with the Mueller probe reaching further and further into Trump's inner circle and Congress being even less popular than the president, it isn't a matter of if the Democrats get into power, but when

With Trump's disastrous presidency careening from one fuck up to the next, the Republicans are basically engaging in a scorched earth policy that consists of destroying as much of the government as the can and grabbing as much money for the rich as possible. They understand that they will be booted out of power in the not too distant future and are doing the bidding of their billionaire donors before it is too late.
