What the fuck just happened in Alabama? Roy Moore, the bible-thumping super-Christian was accused by three women (so far) of being "romantically pursued" by him in his 30s while they were in their teens. While Moore is denying this, one Alabama Republican doesn't see a problem:
“There is nothing to see here,” Alabama State Auditor Jim Ziegler told the Washington Examiner. “The allegations are that a man in his early 30s dated teenage girls. Even the Washington Post report says that he never had sexual intercourse with any of the girls and never attempted sexual intercourse.”
Maybe not, but he did feel up a 14 year old which is still both illegal and disgusting. Unless, of course, Jesus says it's OK:
“He’s clean as a hound’s tooth,” Ziegler claimed, before relying on Scripture to defend Moore.
“Take the Bible. Zachariah and Elizabeth for instance. Zachariah was extremely old to marry Elizabeth and they became the parents of John the Baptist,” Ziegler said choosing his words carefully before invoking Christ. “Also take Joseph and Mary. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of Jesus.”
“There’s just nothing immoral or illegal here,” Ziegler concluded. “Maybe just a little bit unusual.”
Clean as a hound's tooth? I'm old enough to remember way back in 2016 when conservative Christians railed against the practice of child brides in Muslim countries. They used to think an adult man touching an underage girl was a grave sin but apparently that was before Trumpism made anything acceptable as long as you put an "R" next to your name on the ballot. I guess it makes sense? Anyone willing to tolerate Nazis in their political movement has pretty much abandoned the concept of right and wrong. If genocide is not a bridge too far, we can certainly make room for pedophilia. But only from a straight God fearing Christian like Roy Moore. Gay pedophile endorsers like Milo Yiannopoulos are still gross and icky.
And Ziegler is far from alone is bravely standing up for diddling little kids. Sean Hannity leapt to Moore's defense by initially saying the sexual contact (not "intercourse", "contact", because that makes it moral and decent, you see) was consensual before claiming he only meant the two older girls when he was raked over the coals. Breitbart rushed out an article attempting to frame the story as a political attack on Moore, whom Steve Bannon, Breitbart's white nationalist executive chairman, has championed. Other Republicans flat out said they don't care as long as he's a Republican:
Alabama Bibb County Republican chairman Jerry Pow told the Star's Dale that he'd vote for Moore even if he had committed a sex crime against a teenage girl."
I would vote for Judge Moore because I wouldn't want to vote for Doug [Jones]," Pow said, referring to Moore's election opponent. "I'm not saying I support what he did."
There is exactly zero reason to believe Moore being a sexual predator will have any impact on his run for office. In fact, it may even boost his numbers as he comes under attack by the "liberal media" and their scurrilous lies. Republicans love nothing more than playing the victim card and Moore is already nailing himself to a Mega Church-sized cross:
In a couple of days, we'll see polling about the allegations and I don't expect conservative voters to care in the slightest. Alabama Republicans fancy themselves to be deeply religious people but their "family values" are less about protecting women and children from predators like Moore and more about punishing the LGBT community for existing. With a mindset like that, they won't just overlook Moore diddling a little girl, they'll happily embrace Ziegler's creepy biblical justification for it as proof that Moore is blessed by God.
Meanwhile, when Senate Republicans accept Moore into their fold (and they will if he wins), the party will cross one of the very few remaining moral thresholds left in its reckless pursuit of power over principal. They've turned a blind eye to nepotism, widespread corruption, sexual assault, literal treason, white nationalism, and now, dog help us all, pedophilia.
Republicans are accepting and defending a pedophile.
It's time to admit that the Republican Party is a cancer. It must be destroyed and replaced with a party based on principal, not the blind pursuit of power at all costs.
A pedophile. They're really doing this.
UPDATE: This article previously stated that Milo Yiannopolous was himself a pedophile. It has been amended to reflect the fact that he endorsed pedophilia.
There are 360 days left to the 2018 elections.
