White America is still traumatized by the sight of black athletes taking a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality. Black America is still traumatized on a daily basis by the sight of cops brutalizing black skin for little to no reason.
For example, two days ago a video surfaced of a school cop breaking up a fight between two kids, one black, one white. The officer, at least one foot taller and over one hundred pounds heavier than the two sixth graders, somehow couldn't separate the two without slamming one kid to the ground. Guess which one? Hint: Not the white one.
And just to make sure we all got the message, he only drags one kid off the playground. Want to take another guess which one? Yeah, you don't really need to. The white kid might as well have been completely invisible to the police officer because he's white and white kids are the "good" kids. Meanwhile, you just know how those black kids are. There's a reason they get suspended and expelled from school far more often and there's no way it has anything to do with institutional and systemic racism, no sireebob!
Watch how Black America lives every day.
Angry white people will protest (get it?) that a kid being manhandled by a school cop is not the same thing as unarmed black men being killed by the police. First, thanks for acknowledging it's happening. You know what they say about the first step. Second, are you sure about that? Are you sure that the casual disregard and disrespect for black skin in both cases aren't precisely the same?
Add 6 years, 10 inches and 60 pounds to the black kid and all of a sudden that same cop isn't just throwing that kid to the ground, he's pulling his gun and putting that kid 6 feet under it. Afterwards, he'll tell a sad story about how he feared for his life from the "demonic strength" of a black teenager. And then he'll get a slap on the wrist. Maybe. That's why black athletes take the knee.
Black athletes take the knee because a cop broke up a fight between a white kid and a black kid by throwing the black kid to the ground and then only punishing the black kid. It's not clear that the officer will even get a slap on the wrist much less lose his job for violently attacking a child when he could have easily pulled them apart.
Black athletes take the knee because the police, on camera, can shoot Patrick Harmon, a crying, unarmed 50-year-old black man in the back while he's running away, say they were afraid for their life when there was clearly no threat whatsoever and be immediately cleared of all wrong doing. This happened just a day later.
It's a very simple equation: The black athletes taking the knee represent the very best of our country. They're peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights to fight for justice and equality; the very things our nation were founded on. Those screaming their hate at them oppose those founding principles, making them the worst America has to offer. No wonder they're being led by the very worst of them all.
