In their rush to destroy Obamacare so they can give a massive tax cut to billionaires, Republicans are throwing roughly 30 million people off their insurance. One of the ways they will accomplish this is by simply making it unaffordable. The standard right wing reply is to "get a job, ya bum!" but what happens when those "bums" are senior citizens not yet old enough to receive Medicare but still have the accumulating health issues we all get from advancing age?

AARP, the American Association of Retired Persons, is offended by the GOP's plan to punish the elderly with what amounts to an "age tax." It's not like they can run out and get a second or third job to pay for their medications and even if they could, some the rate hikes they face are so brutal, it wouldn't make a difference.

In a comprehensive look at the damage Graham-Cassidy will inflict on the elderly, AARP does nothing to soften the blow. You won't find any of Sen. Cassidy's dishonest pandering here:

Under the Graham-Cassidy bill, older adults could face potentially enormous premium increases. Under current law, a 60-year-old earning $25,000 a year would pay an average of $1,608 per year in health insurance premiums in 2020. Under the proposed legislation, he/she could see their premiums increase by as much as $10,572 in 2020 at the national level – amounting to a total $12,180 – due to the elimination of tax credits. In Alaska, a 60- year old earning $25,000 buying insurance in the Marketplace could see their premiums increase as much as $26,986.

The numbers are horrifying across the board. One of the tables AARP assembled show the potential total increase 60-year-olds making only $25,000 could face in just over two years as Graham-Cassidy sends their premiums soaring and strips them of any financial aid to meet their medical needs. Here's a sample:

  • Alaska: $31,790
  • California: 17,149
  • Florida: $15,714
  • Iowa: $15,828
  • Missouri: $17,354
  • North Carolina: $20,716
  • Tennessee: $19,783
  • West Virginia: $18,462
  • Wyoming: $18,988

What part of that makes America "great" again, exactly?

It's not a secret that Republicans wouldn't mind going back to the days where the elderly had to eat cat food but that they're so eager to send them to an early grave is appalling even for them. There's not a lot of time left to stop this latest abomination so if you have a Republican Senator, call (202) 224-3121 and tell them that if they vote yes, you will dedicate your life to seeing them removed from office. It's the only thing they care about anymore.

There are 410 days left to the 2018 elections.
