The Daily Caller Wins Prize For The Dumbest Response to Steve Scalise Shooting

Yes, how disgusting liberals are for demanding gun control so that mass shootings like the one today don't happen, and people -- regardless of their politics -- can play basketball safely without worrying about being shot to pieces by a mentally disturbed madman with a gun fetish.

Andrew Follette, the Energy and Science reporter for Tucker Carlson's website The Daily Caller wins the prize for the dumbest response to the mass shooting in Virginia earlier today. This was his headline:

Wrote Follett:

It didn’t take long for liberal pundits to reignite the gun control debate after a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers and staff at baseball practice Wednesday morning, wounding Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and four others.

Prominent liberal pundits and journalists used the Twitter hashtag “Gun Control”to bash Republican opposition on gun control and to push for more gun regulations not long after news of the shooting broke...

Yes, how disgusting liberals are for demanding gun control so that mass shootings like the one today don't happen, and people -- regardless of their politics -- can play baseball safely without worrying about being shot to pieces by a mentally disturbed madman with a gun fetish.

Follett appears to be under the impression that gun control advocates want to have stricter controls on firearms just to irritate Republicans and score some political points. It apparently hasn't occurred to him that having stricter gun controls -- particularly in a state like Virginia where gun laws are basically non-existent -- could have easily prevented the shooting, and gun control advocates aren't using it as an excuse to further a pet political cause for their own narcissistic purposes. It hasn't occurred to him that gun control advocates are desperately worried about the safety of all Americans given the US has the highest gun death rate on the planet, and don't view the issue as a political one, but of preserving human life.

The urge to politicize this tragedy is strong, and there may well be an argument to be made about extremism on both sides of the spectrum. This should (and will) happen in the days to come, but going after gun control advocates who simply want to live in a more peaceful society isn't just dumb, it's disgusting.

Politics aside, let's hope Scalise and everyone else injured in the shooting make a speedy recovery. And in the mean time, Americans must work towards preventing tragedies like this from occurring with such alarming frequency -- and that includes discussing gun control whether people like Follett agree with it or not.
