The Wall St Journal is reporting that Fox News is finally about to dump Bill O'Reilly. After it was revealed that there were multiple reports about O’Reilly sexually harassing several colleagues, the network has been unable to stem the flow of advertisers leaving the nightly program, and are finally taking action. Reported the Journal:
Fox News is preparing to cut ties with star anchor Bill O’Reilly, according to people close to the situation, after revelations that he and Fox parent 21st Century Fox settled multiple sexual harassment complaints led to an exodus of advertisers from his show and mounting pressure on the network.
According to multiple reports, the Murdoch family has been divided as to what to do about O'Reilly in the wake of the story that broke several weeks ago, but it appears they now have no option after a new alleged victim emerged with even more damaging accusations. According to the unnamed African American woman, O'Reilly would grunt at her "like a wild boar" and refer to her as "hot chocolate".
Fox is clearly calculating that regardless of the veracity of the new accusation, O'Reilly's brand is irreversibly damaged and he is no longer a commercially viable product. It is a shame the decision wasn't made internally in the immediate aftermath of the accusations, but this is Fox News we are talking about -- a network run by a repellant misogynist with his own sordid history of sexual harassment.
Regardless, it is safe to say that we have finally seen the last of Bill O'Reilly, and not a moment too soon.
