During the confirmation hearing for Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III to become the attorney general for an administration that visibly rode into Washington on a wave of white nationalism and oppression, Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren fought the good fight and warned that ol' Jeffy boy would pose a threat to civil rights. Warren even became a meme after she was silenced by our country's first turtle senator while reading a letter written by Coretta Scott King that opposed Session's 1986 failed nomination to federal judge. Because, somehow, America had a harder time swallowing racism 30 years ago than it does now. Which is what happens when social media weaponizes dumb and there's a page to support every flavor of hate under the sun.

But setting aside the not insignificant fact that Sessions lied during his confirmation hearing and has already had to recuse himself from investigating the Trump administration's ties to Russia - No big deal. - he's already tipped his hand by making it abundantly clear that he wants to reignite the disastrous War on Drugs by taking a hardline stance on marijuana and bringing back private prisons. And in case it's not clear who's going to fill those prisons, Sessions is proving Cory Booker and Elizabeth Warren right by ordering the Justice Department to begin reviewing every single Obama-era police reform that arose from DOJ investigations uncovering a systemic culture of racism and constitutional violations in departments across the country. From The Washington Post:

“This is terrifying,” said Jonathan Smith, executive director of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, who spent five years as the department’s chief of special litigation, overseeing investigations into 23 police departments such as New Orleans, Cleveland and Ferguson, Mo. “This raises the question of whether, under the current attorney general, the Department of Justice is going to walk away from its obligation to ensure that law enforcement across the country is following the Constitution.”

Essentially, Jeff Sessions wants to erase everything that the Black Lives Matters movement and civil rights advocates accomplished under Obama because the Fraternal Order of Police, and a treasure trove of racists, didn't endorse Trump to watch officers be held accountable for their actions. Sure, cops are still walking away scot-free even after being caught on video shooting an unarmed man in the back, but isn't it kind of bullshit that they had to face a trial in the first place? Talk about a pain in the ass. Plus nothing says small government like executing American citizens at will over broken taillights or unpaid child support. That's clearly a concept that doesn't make every tricorn hat-wearing asshole who screamed "Tyranny!" for eight years look like an complete idiot who has no idea what that word even means. Murder patrols make us great again.
