The people behind the Doomsday Clock must seriously be considering upgrading the clock to a digital version so they can start measuring in milliseconds. That's assuming they don't all drink themselves into a coma to get away from the horror that is Donald Trump's foreign policy:
SEOUL, South Korea — Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson ruled out on Friday opening any negotiation with North Korea to freeze its nuclear and missile programs and said for the first time that the Trump administration might be forced to take pre-emptive action “if they elevate the threat of their weapons program” to an unacceptable level.
We're already waging cyberwar against N. Korea's nuclear program so the only "pre-emptive action" left involves the use of military force. Right on China's border. What could possibly go wrong?
This is a whole different beast from the regular agitation from Republicans to invade Iran. While Iran and Russia are allies, they don't share a border so it's unlikely Russia would go to war to defend them from American aggression (and don't sugar coat it, that's exactly what it would be). China would have no choice but to respond if the United States so much as lobs a single hand grenade into N. Korea. The possibility of the current regime being toppled and replaced by a pro-western government would be intolerable. Even absolute foreign policy amateurs like me understand this. Keeping the West off its borders is explicitly why China joined the Korean War against us; expecting them to do any less if we start bombing, or god forbid, invade, N. Korea is lunacy.
But weeny waggling dickplomacy is all Trump knows. Everything he does is about domination and bullying and it's worked for him for decades against people who couldn't fight back on an even playing field. China does not fall into that category and taking on them on their own turf is a great way to get a very large number of American troops killed just to service Trump's ego. The best we can hope for is that this is a tactic to force concessions from China or really kick off that Cold War Trump wants that won't take on a life of its own.
The most dangerous aspect of this is that Trump has already ruled out any kind of negotiation that doesn't involve total surrender on the part of N. Korea. It's even more dangerous considering Trump will see backing down from this stance as a sign of weakness, leaving him no way to deescalate the situation if it starts to spin out of control, a very real possibility with fellow autocratic psycho Kim Jong-un in charge.
"Ended The Human Race Because He Wasn't Weak" does not feel like an epitaph anyone would be particularly happy with but as long as it was done while making America great again, the end of human civilization will totally have been worth it.
There are 598 days left to the 2018 elections.
