Friday night, Rachel Maddow discussed the surge in immigration raids under the geas of Trump's war on Latinos. While the surge itself was not surprising in the context of Trump's racist rhetoric, the fact that ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) lied about them is a signal that things are about to take an ugly turn in America.
In response to this unnecessary and obvious dishonesty, California Senate leader Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) blasted ICE:
“I appreciate that ICE finally disclosed details about their recent raids, but stunned to learn that ICE’s public comments made yesterday were blatantly false. When news first broke of raids happening across Southern California yesterday, ICE told the media that reports of 100 immigrants being arrested were ‘grossly exaggerated’ yet today they admit they arrested 160 people.“
ICE also told numerous media outlets that yesterday was a “routine” day which it most clearly was not. And they have yet to disclose the exact crimes each person was convicted of to support their arrests.“
The disconnect between what was coming out of the ICE Regional Office yesterday and what was publicly disclosed today is deeply troubling and needs to be fully explained by the Trump Administration.
That won't be happening because the Trump administration considers itself above such petty considerations such as transparency and accountability. And that attitude seems to be rapidly disseminating throughout the federal government. Even worse, ICE so brazenly lying about their actions suggests that certain federal agencies are starting to behave like Trump himself: Lie, lie, and lie some more no matter how obvious the lie is.
And why not? As long as Trump is in the White House and Republicans control Congress, such behavior will not only be ignored, it will quite possibly be encouraged. Trump constantly demands total fealty and rewards those who obey. Republicans have made it crystal clear that they will not be investigating anything that doesn't involve punishing Democrats. In that kind of atmosphere, being accountable to the public or even the law is a distant concern. They were only following orders....
One of the great ironies of the 2016 election is that millions of angry white people allegedly voted for Trump because Obama was a tyrant and Hillary lied to the American people. Now we have a president that rages at the constitutional checks on his power and a federal government that is becoming increasingly hostile to public scrutiny. When the government considers the people to be the enemy, that's when a country spirals out of control. We're on a slippery slope and Republicans are too busy dismantling Obamacare to pay attention.
There are 632 days left to the 2018 elections.
