This will no doubt leave you shocked, shocked, but one of Donald Trump’s reality TV administration appointments has just been outed as an unscrupulous cheat. CNN Money has broken the story that conservative writer and former Fox News indignant blonde woman Monica Crowley plagiarized large parts of her 2012 book, “What the (Bleep) Just Happened.” The network pored over the thing and says it found “upwards of 50 examples of plagiarism from numerous sources, including copying with minor changes of news articles, other columnists, think tanks, and Wikipedia.” None of these stolen lines were referenced or credited as either footnotes or in a bibliography.
Given that she’s on television, Crowley of course has been tapped by Trump to be his senior director of strategic communications for the National Security Council. CNN already contacted Trump’s people about the plagiarism scandal and, surprise, their response is basically, “What scandal?” In short, they’re simply denying any of this ugliness is happening. “Harper-Collins – one of the largest and most respected publishers in the world – published her book which has become a national bestseller,” they write. “Any attempt to discredit Monica is nothing more than a politically motivated attack that seeks to distract from the real issues facing this country.” Also, we’ve always been at war with Eastasia.
This is how it’s going to be from now on so you may as well get used to it. Trump spent his entire campaign ignoring inconvenient truths and basically making up his own reality as he went. To him, facts are what he says they are. What this means is that no one will ever be held accountable for bad behavior in the Trump administration because Trump and his spokespeople will simply deny that the bad behavior ever happened. The kind of corruption we're talking about here will be staggering, honestly beyond the ability for normal people to comprehend. The truth just doesn't matter to this incoming president. Anyone who levels honest criticism of any kind will simply be shrugged off as a "hater."
Imagine the kind of atmosphere where regardless of what a person does, the kind of incompetent or nefarious actions he or she takes, there will never be accountability or consequences. After a while, critics, fair-minded journalists, and fact-checkers will simply stop trying because, well, what's the use? Trump has hit on a political miracle that renders him bullet-proof: have no shame whatsoever and deny anyone you consider an adversary power over you.
Monica Crowley may very well have her book pulled by Harper-Collins. To the world, she'll be a disgraceful fraud and an feckless cheat. To Trump, she'll still be an employee.
