JFK Airport mass protests

In response to the Trump administration's chaotic, astonishingly cruel order to block Syrian refugees and other travelers coming from several Muslim-majority countries, protestors took over airports around the country and refused to leave until the order was lifted. A federal judge in Brooklyn then temporarily halted parts of the executive order at the behest of an action filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on Saturday morning on behalf of two Iraqis detained at JFK airport in New York.

This was nothing short of extraordinary, and a clear sign that the resistance to Donald Trump is getting stronger with every passing day. As the Huffington Post reported:

Although temporary and subject to appeal, it represents the first major constitutional setback faced by the new administration.

“This ruling preserves the status quo and ensures that people who have been granted permission to be in this country are not illegally removed off U.S. soil,” said Lee Gelernt, the ACLU lawyer who was in court Saturday arguing the case, in a statement.

Over the past 8 days, the Trump administration has wasted no time in taking a wrecking ball to everything the United States has historically stood for, and its latest move to ban Muslims from entering the country is an act of brazen cruelty with no real purpose. As Vox's Dylan Matthews points out

The reasons for Trump’s ban on refugees could not be more feeble, and could not be more petty. It serves no actual security purpose. You have a better chance of getting killed by a train, or by your own clothes catching on fire, than by an immigrant terrorist attack. The odds of a refugee killing you in a terrorist strike are about 1 in 3.6 billion. That's about four hundred times less likely than being hit by lightning twice. If you look back at significant terrorist attacks in the US like San Bernardino or the Pulse nightclub shooting or 9/11, exactly none of them would have been prevented by this policy.

As nasty as Trump and his band of neo-fascist thugs are getting, the public response has been every bit as powerful. With protests set to erupt all over the country in the coming months, decent Americans are standing up to the new administration with a fervor that has never been seen before.

This is what resistance looks like Mr. Trump, and it is just getting started.
