Bill O'Reilly has once again stirred up controversy by spending a segment of his show "The O'Reilly Factor" whining about his white privilege being attacked by liberals. On Tuesday evening, the Fox News host discussed what he thinks is the "hidden reason" Democrats want to get rid of the Electoral College and it was as ignorant as you can possibly imagine.
“This is all about race," O'Reilly said. "The left sees white privilege in America as an oppressive force that must be done away with. Therefore white working class voters must be marginalized.”
According to O'Reilly, the one true expert in American race relations, liberals believe that “white men have set up a system of oppression and that system must be destroyed ... The left wants power taken away from the white establishment and they want a profound change in the way America is run.”
He's not entirely wrong. The left does believe that the Founding Fathers set up a system of oppression because, well, they did and history proves it. When the Constitution was signed, the only people who had any rights in this country were rich white men. Hell, there was even a compromise that specifically said black people were only "three-fifths" of a person. Women weren't given the right to vote until more than 100 years after the Constitution was signed and African-Americans in the South weren't able to freely vote until the 1960s. What's worse is that women and minorities still fight every single day to hang on to the rights we have while men like O'Reilly whine that we are somehow threatening his rights as a white man by existing and demanding equality.
This, however, is not why the left wants the Electoral College to be abolished. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the archaic institution putting a man in power that the majority of America did not vote for. The Daily Banter's Bob Cesca went into great detail about this topic on Monday in his article,"I Supported the Electoral College Until It Became a Deeply Flawed and Pointless Institution." As Bob explained:
the Electoral College system has, for the second time in five elections undermined the popular vote. We can only label this as a major malfunction with the system. This time, given Hillary's popular vote margin, it was an egregious refutation of the will of the people. Obviously, the current system is deeply flawed and anachronistic.
Donald Trump is president because the Electoral College worked the way it was supposed to, by taking the power away from the majority and putting it into the hands of the elite. O'Reilly knows this, but the truth doesn't sell as well as fear mongering.
