UPDATE: It's over, Hillary Clinton has now conceded and Donald Trump is the next President of the United States.
As of writing this, a Donald Trump presidency is almost certain. Unless there are several major miracles, Hillary Clinton has lost the 2016 presidential election.
Make no mistake about it, this is bad. Very, very bad. Donald Trump is completely unqualified to be anywhere near the White Houses let alone run it, and America and the rest of the world is going to pay an catastrophic price for sending him there. I could go into the reasons why this is the case, but like the rest of the team here at the Banter, I've spent the past 18 months explaining what a huge threat to all life on earth Trump represents.
Personally, I am too tired to be angry about this, too emotionally spent to engage in recriminations, and so sick of the hatred and animosity we've seen that I cannot muster the will to take part in it any more.
After the shock wears off -- and it will -- every decent person in America and the rest of the world must come together and try to understand what happened, and set about doing something to fix it. The same emotions that got us to this horrendous moment in history will not get us out of it. We cannot continue the animosity. We cannot continue the name calling. We cannot continue ripping each other apart in the name of whatever it is we believe in.
Those of us on the left fought against what we saw as a dangerous threat to human decency, but too often we engaged in the same behavior they did. We mocked and insulted them, called them idiots and belittled their way of life. I am just as guilty of this as anyone else, and I know I must to better. We must do better.
We must gear up to do battle against the darker forces of our psyches, but it can only be won with compassion and love. We have tried every other way, and it doesn't work. Hate breeds hate, and we cannot afford to hate any more.
We must remember that for every action there is a reaction. We are seeing the overwhelming forces of hatred, racism and misogyny take over America's soul right now, but it can be defeated by its opposite forces. Love, kindness and tolerance must be our weapon of choice -- ruthlessly organized and willing to do battle, but always with our best intentions.
Stay strong everyone, we must dare to hope in the darkest of hours. Our ancestors have risen to the occasion before, and so too can we.
