On October 9th, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will square off for round two of their three round presidential debate.
Last time around, Trump managed to stay composed for 10 minutes before descending into complete chaos and losing virtually every second to Clinton for the rest of the night. Trump's performance was widely regarded one of the worst of any presidential candidate in American history -- so much so that the Republican party failed to rally behind their nominee in an attempt to put a positive spin on it.
“I’m not going to talk about it,” Linsey Graham told the Huffington Post afterwards.
“He started out strong but needed to be able to stay disciplined," said Rep. Patrick Meehan. "And I think the next debate you’ll probably see him more capable."
This type of reaction is completely unheard of during a presidential election -- the GOP has always maintained a steady discipline of party unity when it comes to battling Democrats despite its extreme internal dysfunction. While Republicans specialize in ignoring reality, this was a step too far and anyone with a modicum of self respect couldn't come out and say that Trump had won.
Trump's inability to remain composed during perhaps the most important moment of this campaign thus far was extremely revealing on several fronts. Firstly, it showed Trump is definitively unqualified for the presidency. Putting aside the fact that he displayed a 6th grader's understanding of policy, his constant interrupting, shouting and general disrespect for Hillary Clinton was indicative of a man with no self control whatsoever. Secondly, it showed he has no ability to prepare for anything, let alone doing the necessary homework before taking office and running the country. Trump hadn't bothered to prepare for his debate with Clinton, believing that his "best words" would be enough to defeat one of the sharpest, most experienced politicians in modern history. It wasn't, and Clinton made him pay for his hubris all night long.
Most tellingly though, was the blatant sexism Trump displayed throughout the night. His treatment of Clinton was horrifyingly misogynistic and he quite literally could not stop himself interrupting, dismissing and shouting her down. It wasn't just the fact that he could not control himself, it was the fact that he could not control his deeply misogynistic instincts -- instincts that tell him he must be superior to Hillary Clinton because she is a woman and he is a man. As much as his debate handlers wanted him to control these urges, Trump's history of extreme misogyny shows that he simply cannot help himself and was never going to resist his natural instincts.
And that is why on October 9th, Trump will lose to Clinton again, and lose badly. No matter how much he attempts to control himself, he won't be able to prevent himself from shouting down a woman and dismissing her because of her gender. Because once a sexist pig, always a sexist pig. Hillary Clinton knows this and will lure him into trap after trap after trap making the last debate look like a warm up.
